I have 3 geriatric chi’s. They have very sensitive stomachs. Vets were not helpful at all/ made stomach problems worse with the foods with additives. I cook ground, beef and ground turkey. I add long rain white rice/ not minute rice/ I add broth to mixtureWill add a tiny bit of plain yogurt, or sweet potato And I use garbanzo beans once in a while for treats. All 3 have not had stomach problems since on this food regimen for one year. They are very healthy.

I joined a holistic pet group on Facebook and I make mine. Ground turkey, chicken liver, riced cauliflower, spinach and shredded carrots. I do bake it, mine won’t eat raw. I add hemp seeds and flax seeds before feeding. Mine was in rough shape before I joined the group. Spent a lot on vets and it didn’t help at all. I add Ester C when I remember. I do forget that too often.

I feed Merrick puppy. I used Science Diet for years ( and on 5 chi’s). My vet said it was too high in carbs …. And my previous dogs did have weight issues. Merrick is higher in protein and my 2 are thriving on it. I soak it in beef broth or water before feeding.

Read the label. You want real meat not by products. Frozen raw is best (primal, small Batch, Stella and Chewy) next best would be freeze dried raw – just rehydrate with water, bone broth or even goats milk. Remember our babies are still carnivores and need more meat that veggies and carbs. I’d talk to an animal nutritionist about it if you still aren’t sure. And remember a vet is not a nutritionist and they get paid to push Iams, science diet and the like.

I used to boil chicken breast, carrots, green beans and make lil packets and freeze them. Take them out of the freezer as needed. You can give vitamins as well. I also give mine other raw veggies and fruit sometimes. If u want to give hard food, buy them chi small bites. U can put a lil bit of warm water or broth on the hard food. Good luck.

I have 5 Chihuahuas and we use diamond puppy. Our vet told us to keep feeding even into senior years. Never had a problem with it. They are small bites and have never had blood sugar issues or problems. They range from 14 to 2. They get some vegetables and cottage cheese once a week for snacks. We free feed them until 2 then twice a day. They got fat with free feeding after 2. Good luck. It’s trial and error for a while. My vet had us have glucose available in refrigerator as young puppies cause they can drop their blood sugars and it’s scary.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Best Chihuahua Puppy Foods

  1. What should I look for in the best Chihuahua puppy food?
Look for high-quality protein (like chicken, lamb, or fish) as the first ingredient, small kibble size for their tiny mouths, and essential nutrients like DHA for brain development and calcium for bone growth. Avoid fillers, artificial colors, and preservatives.

  2. How much should I feed my Chihuahua puppy?
Chihuahua puppies typically need ¼ to ½ cup of food per day, divided into 3-4 meals. Feeding amount depends on their age, weight, and activity level. Always refer to your food brand’s guidelines and consult your vet.

  3. Can Chihuahua puppies eat adult dog food?
No, Chihuahua puppies require more calories, protein, and specific nutrients like DHA and calcium that are formulated specifically for growing dogs. Feeding adult dog food may cause nutritional deficiencies.

  4. Are grain-free diets good for Chihuahua puppies?
Grain-free diets can be suitable, especially for puppies with sensitivities or allergies, but they’re not necessary for every Chihuahua. Check with your vet before making the switch, as some grain-free foods have been linked to heart concerns in dogs.

  5. How often should I change my Chihuahua puppy’s food?
Change food only when necessary—like moving from puppy to adult formula around 10-12 months. When switching, do it gradually over 7–10 days to avoid digestive issues: mix increasing portions of the new food with the old.

  6. Is wet food or dry food better for Chihuahua puppies?
Both have benefits. Dry kibble is better for dental health and is more convenient, while wet food is more palatable and hydrating. Many owners feed a mix to provide variety and balanced nutrition.

  7. What are common food allergies in Chihuahua puppies?
Chihuahuas may be allergic to ingredients like chicken, beef, corn, wheat, or soy. Signs include itching, ear infections, and digestive upset. If you suspect an allergy, try a limited-ingredient or hypoallergenic food and consult your vet.

As always, be sure to consult your veterinarian before making any health changes to your chihuahua’s food. iHeartDogs is reader supported, so some of the links above may be affiliate links where we receive a small commission at no additional cost to you.
