Sponge Filter

How Does It Work?

Sponge filter uses bubbles of air from an external air pump, or an integral water pump to draw water through the sponge.

What Maintenance Does It Require?

The sponge need to be rinsed about every 2 to 4 weeks. It’s helpful to wash the sponge gently with water from the fish tank instead of tap water.

It is good to replace the sponge after 3 to 6 months’ usage as the holes of sponge is gradually clogged by the tiny debris.

Key Features Sponge filter provide both mechanical and bio filtration Easy to set up & clean Safe for fish as the filter produces minimal current Includes: 3pcs sponge filter

Sponge filter provide both mechanical and bio filtration, also, the air infusion chamber produces minute bubbles which increase the oxygen solubility
Safe for fish: soft sponge material, traps floating debris and won’t suck up your fish
Easy to set up & clean: simply install an airline into the unit and turn on the air pump, simply rinse and squeeze sponge in tank water
Recommend tank size: up to 50 gallon, excellent for small size fish like betta, dwarf cichlid, guppy, killifish etc., or for hatcheries, maternity tanks, nano tanks and fry tanks, as the filter produces minimal current and has almost no way to suck the fish through the filter
Includes: 3pcs of sponge filter. Dimension: 3.5″D X 8.0″H

Customers say

Customers find these sponge filters work well, particularly in 10-gallon tanks, and appreciate their value for the price. The filters are easy to clean by rinsing and wringing, and customers like their build quality, noting they go back together without breaking. They are well-suited for various tank types, including betta, nano, and quarantine tanks, and customers find them easy to use. Regarding size, while some find them great for small tanks, others mention they’re too small to fit airstones.

Better than hang on back filters
I’ve been using these small sponge filters that connect to an air pump line for months, and they are just as effective as the more expensive hang-on-back (HOB) filters that pump water. These simple yet highly efficient filters provide excellent biological and mechanical filtration while maintaining gentle water flow—perfect for fish, shrimp, and fry tanks. One of the biggest advantages is their ease of maintenance. Every couple of weeks, I simply dip the sponge in dechlorinated water and squeeze it a few times to rinse out the sediment. It’s important to use chlorine-free water to avoid killing the beneficial bacteria that help keep the tank healthy.Compared to traditional HOB filters, sponge filters are **cost-effective, quiet, and reliable**. They don’t require expensive replacement cartridges, and they run smoothly as long as the air pump is functioning. They also provide great aeration, which is a bonus for oxygen-loving fish.Overall, I highly recommend these small sponge filters for **any freshwater aquarium**. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced aquarist, they’re an affordable, low-maintenance, and highly effective alternative to pricier filtration systems.

Good for Bettas, easy to mod, not perfect but quite good for price
First, it is a good idea to mod these to use an internal air stone. Use snips of some kind (like small side-cutters) to cut space on the inside, then attach a small air stone (0.6″ cylinder worked for my “small” sized filter) inside the filter from the cap using the tubing. Doing this will make the filter create finer bubbles, providing better filtration and less water surface disturbance. It will also quiet the bubbling from the filters down quite a bit.Sponge filters are great all-round filters, and work well for fish that don’t like movement (like Bettas). You need an air pump and airline tubing to use them, though. They won’t flood the ground around the tank like other types of filters, and they don’t really break (air pumps do, though). They are a little unsightly and harder to hide than some hang-on-back filters, but not impossible. This particular sponge filter is about as good as any other, with some caveats. Some aquarium experts recommend larger, open-cell sponges for their filters, which will clog up less than the fine closed-cell sponge on this filter. Because of this design, you will need to clean this filter more often than you otherwise might need to. It does work, though. Also, this filter is not quite weighted as much as it should be. Even when fully soaked, it’s a little too buoyant. A good sponge filter should sit comfortably on the bottom of the tank.Do not ever replace the sponge, by the way. To clean it, you pull it out of the tank and squeeze it out gently in the old tank water during a water change. The sponge may last years, and will harbor beneficial bacteria for your tank. If you replace it, you will mess your tank up. To replace a filter with another, you want to run the old one alongside the new one for a least a few weeks to help the bacteria colonize the new one.

Bubbles too big, works great after airstone mod!
These are a good deal for 3 of these filters. I only needed to use 1, but it’s good to know that I have 2 extra. For me the bubbles were just too big and ended up causing too much turbulence on the surface of the water in my tank. I just didn’t like how it was doing that. Of course it could’ve been perfectly fine for the fish. In addition to how those bubbles looked, as they erupted through the surface of the water, it was loud as well.Basically I ended up going to Petco and buying those small cylindrical air stones. It just so happened these fit perfectly in the inner cylinder of these sponge filters. You have to disassemble the sponge filter bottom part. Then you’ll see supports that look like spokes, which support a center tube. You’ll have to cut those supports with something. Then use pliers to pull the center tube out. It’s just held by friction. Then put the airstone in. Mine fit too loose but I noticed that the airstone’s tubing was tapered, so I simply cut offa few millimeters off the top. This was enough for it to have a good contact and I just pushed it in as firmly as possible. When you reassemble you might have to cut off the original end tube connector a bit so it’ll fit with the airstone. After I did this mod, the bubbles are much smaller and the noise level is way down. In my book, now it’s perfect!

    They really work
While visiting a fish store, saw they use this type of filter, so found these on Amazon. They were inexpensive and the size needed for my 5.5 gallon tank. Came 3 in the box. The foam is 2 1/4 inches across by 2 inches high. Set one up in the tank. Even though they tend to float, I used a air tube suction holder on the air tube close to it to hold it in place. Been running now for about a week and a half. I am surprised just how clear and clean it keeps the water. Supposedly it’s good for a year also befor changing or cleaning. Also it eliminates the need for a powered filter. See photo
