Good starter – medium level kit
Due to the weather I haven’t been able to actually catch anything – hard to fly fish frozen water. I haven’t fly fished in years and wasn’t an expert by any means. My first one was a combo from a box store and this one has a much better feel and flexibility to it even though the rod is more pieces than that one. You get backing line, fly line, flies, clippers, a few other odds and ends – basically everything you need to start fly fishing. Maybe line with welded loops would be easier, maybe more diversity in the flies provided would be good – but that’s nothing deal breaking. Color – I could have done with something different than pink line and a purplish-pink rod but then I’m not into fishing for fashion reasons so if it works I don’t really care. The case it comes with is pretty sturdy – will definitely protect it as long as the case holds up and the shoulder straps are nice, especially if you hike to places you are going to fish. Got the rod set up, now I just need some weather and cooperative fish.

This is a great starter kit for a beginner. I was impressed with the amount of gear that came in the kit. The rod and everything that came with it fit in the case. The stainless steel finish on both the rod and reel looks super sleek. The case that the rods ride in is hardened, so you wonât break them. It has a nice shoulder carrying strap. Because this rod doesnât have welded loops, a beginner will want to search for the phrases âHow to tie fly line to backing using the Albright knotâ or âHow to attach backing to fly line without a welded loopâ on the internet. There are also handy cards, guides, and charts if you search for âfly fishing knotsâ here on Amazon. The bearings are easy to rotate for either left- or right-handedness. The pink fly line is helpful for someone who is colorblind to see against the water. decent starter kit fly rod
Keep in mind that this is nothing more than a starter kit. It does require you to put the backing and fly line on the reel. Fortunately their are alot of videos to show you how to put line and backing on a fly reel online. Since welded loops are standard on almost all fly lines I truly believe the line that they provided should have welded loops already especially for a beginner kit. Now that being said you can also weld your own fly line loops and their are videos online to teach you how to do that (its actually pretty easy). I also think the fly line should be one weight heavier as learning to fly fish is not easy unless you can feel the rod load when casting. The rod is a beginner rod and it feels like one as it is not feather light like a high end rod but not really heavy like a really cheap rod. I would say it is a decent rod for what your paying for the kit. The rod feels fairly durable and I bent it pulling on the line way further than you will ever need to and it has a fairly smooth parabolic bend right to the handle and it didn’t break which was a good thing. As with any rod, time will be the best indicator of durability. The reel is actually quite nice for a beginner kit as it has a full cage and I think it is cnc machined and pretty light with a smooth drag. I had to reverse the bearing in it to allow me to reel it in the correct direction (It is super easy to do just look at the page you purchased it from and it shows you how to do it). The kit comes with a little book as a starter guide and does show you how to tie a double surgeons knot which you can use to create loop to loop connections in the backing and the fly line to connect them when spooling the reel. The book is a nice little starter/intro book to fly fishing and will give you some usefull info if you read it. It does come with a pinch style line cutter and a nice fishing pliers and a retractable tool lanyard to help you with cutting line/bending hooks and other goofy things you run into when fly fishing. The case it comes with is really nice and allows you to fully break the rod down and tuck it safely away when traveling or not in use. Overall I think this is a nice kit for the price and will work just fine for catching panfish, trout and smaller/average size bass with no problems. Forgot to mention it came with 12 medium sized flies and nice little magnetic cover fly box. I am giving it a 4 rating as it could use some improvements in the areas I mentioned, but remember it is a starter kit and that is what you are getting with this kit. It will surely get you a feel for fly fishing and if you take care of it, it should last quite a while from what Ive seen initially. I got this rod thru vine so it was free and if I paid for it I would probably still give it a 4 star rating. It seems to be a decent value for $90.

Literally everything you need except a license
My buddy is an avid fly fisherman and I was planning a trip to go see him up Seattle so I got this kit for my trip. He took me fly fishing and he and I were both very impressed with this fly fishing kit.It comes with everything you need: – Rod & Reel – Flies – Both lines and leaders – Basic instructions and information about fly fishing including useful knots – Even comes with pliers to remove the fly from the fish’s mouthIt does NOT come with instructions on how to assemble everything so I had my buddy put it all together for me. He did not use the fishing line that came with this kit but he said everything else was great. The case came in clutch too because we had to hike (off-trail) for 2 days to get to where we started our float/fishing trip. There was so much brush, I’m glad my rod came in this sturdy case. It was well protected the entire trip.If you’ve always wanted to go fly fishing don’t hesitate to get this kit. It’s a fantastic bargain and you’ll need everything that it comes with.5 stars.
