This Black Aquarium Substrate is perfect for aquascaping to make any plant or fish pop against a dark background. The grains are round and smooth, optimal for sensitive sand sifting fish such as Corydoras and Loaches. Many carpeting plants prefer a finer substrate to attach their roots to, allowing them to grow quickly and healthy. The sand is composed of silica with no added dyes, colors or treatments. There may be some harmless residue, I recommend rinsing several times before adding it to your aquarium. I’ve personally used this sand for many years with great success in my fish tanks. Mix the sand with gravel, pebbles, rocks and other decor to build a gorgeous fishtank. 1lb per gallon of tank volume will cover the bottom will ~1″ of sand Planning for a deeper substrate? Simply multiply the weight needed for your tank by the depth (in inches) of substrate you’d like.

Rinsed quickly butâ¦.
The sand is pretty, and took little effort to rinse, however there are many small brown flecks of something in the black sand. It gives it a more natural look which I like. If you want a monochrome black substrate look elsewhere.

I like it for the most part…
It’s less dense than sand and not as heavy as rocks. My gravel vacuum does not pull this out and it has worked great for my aquarium. The color is very nice. It takes some rinsing, but I let it run under the water for a while, stirred it up now and again and it came out fairly clear. I’m pleased with this purchase.

Looks great.
Takes a lot of rinsing to get all the dust and dye out but I found that I could take it outside and spray it with the hose right in the sack it came in. The tube was my first choice but cleaning the dye proved that outside was the better choice. It’s really a beautiful sand. Just heavy enough to use a gravel vacuum. Six months of use now and my plants are growing strong.

Nice sand but not really black.
Nice sand but I really wouldn’t call it black, there is a lot of green and gold colored material in it. I’d say about 50 50. Make sure to rinse well before use.

Nice Sand
I was struggling locally to find a good black sand for my aquaruim. I was hesitant to purchase sand online, but I’m glad I did. It’s a gorgous black with small specks of some brown. I rinsed it well, you will have some floating but you just net it out after the tank settles. This is normal with sand.
