Customers say
Customers find the sand visually appealing, noting it adds nice contrast to their tanks and is particularly suitable for African Cichlid tanks. The product functions well and customers report their fish love it, with one customer mentioning it keeps pH at 8+. While some customers say it rinses well, others find it very dirty, and one customer reports it killed everything in their tank.

Couldn’t be happier
I bought this for my Tiger Oscar’s new 125 gallon tank. I was worried a bit because the negative reviews where about the tank not clearing up after it has been put in the tank. But after doing a lot or reading, I was convinced that this product is the better of them all. Now, this is a natural product so I really did not expect that it will be perfectly uniform in every bags. I ordered 5 bags of 10lbs and each bag has either much of the black gravel or less of it. Either way, it was beautiful. I attached pictures of what it looked like first time I put water in to wash it. I did not have a big enough basin to wash it with so I just used a big kitchen bowl I have – so, for each bag, I had to dump 1/3 of the bag at a time and the first couple of wash showed the water being very murky. But surprisingly, after about 5 more washes, the water was running practically almost clear but not quite (two pictures attached of the product after the 6-7 washes i made. Some of the bags contained darker sand than the others, but they are all beautiful. I dumped it all into the new fish tank and added water. The water was a little cloudy but I am amazed to see my tank in the water as it has become crystal clear. Attached video. The key here I believe is the proper washing. I was not willing to take a short cut bec I do not want any of my fish to die. So I did rinse very well.

Worth the money and time.
I love the color, and the price. It does take time to rinse , but the outcome is great. The fish love it!!!

This stuff is awesome. You have to rinse it
This stuff is awesome. You have to rinse it, of course, and that is always a pain in the ass but it is really nice in the aquarium. After I filled it and started the pump, the dust disappeared quickly and the aquarium was ready in a day. This stuff stays really clean, is easy to vacuum up off the surface without digging into the sand and has a clean appearance. My crayfish love it.

Great for African Cichlid tanks
Great for african cichlid tanks. Keeps the pH at 8+,was easy to rinse, and settled quickly after filling the tank. Plus the black and white sand looks great in my opinion.

I’ve always had great luck with Caribsea and this product is phenomenal
I’ve always had great luck with Caribsea and this product is phenomenal. I needed a heavier coarser sand substrate for some messy digging fish and this does not disappoint. They can do all the digging they want without mucking up the tank but it’s heavy enough they aren’t able to completely disrupt the hardscape. Stays nice and loose without compaction. The only thing I can say is Caribsea should make similar grain size in more than just this color combo, would loved to have went without the black/white mix and went with something more natural looking… Black, white or Sand colored would be great.

It’s just ok. Not what I was hoping for.
Meh… it ok but it’s not sand. It appears to be a very light weight mixture of crushed lava rock and pumice stone. Very difficult to plant in and decorate. Also very very dirty. It takes a lot of rinsing. Comes with clarifier which is a good thing. I’ll be removing this and replacing with natural river pebbles when cleaning time comes.

May stress fish in a existing aquarium.
5/27/19-I had bought this before for my short 40g fry tank . So I bought one for my tall 55g I love how they look but it seemed to stress out the fish when first added. It does get cloudy but on my 40g that went away completely in about a week, but I did forget to rinse the substrate. I rinsed this one thoroughly and did a 75 % WC on 55g and it got rid of most of the cloudiness. It looks pretty good, 2hrs later. Hopefully I dont lose any fish. Keeping peacocks. The black gravel isn’t bad, and it usually sinks to the bottom or middle of the substrate to ensure proper bacteria colonization I’m guessing. I’ve had all home depot sand before about 3 to 4 inches thick and would get dark spots if you didnt clean it on a weekly basis and move the sand around to get benificial bacteria to the bottom of the sand, that was a pain in the a..

Helped raise pH nice look too.
Really like this sustrate took forever to wash and after 6 riseing still clouded up the tank so bad I couldn’t but after I rised the filter a couple times it cleared up by the next morning. What I really like about it is I’ve been doing pH up for 3 days and saw no change the alkaline was dangerously low. And after I put the substrate in both raised to a heathly level and the pH when up from a light orange to a dark redish orange so now once the tank sets another day I can finally add chiclets like ive been looking forward to doing.

have 80lbs in a 210 gallon (maybe should of gotten 100lbs). raises ph to perfect levels for chiclids. waste doesn’t get embedded and its heavy enough it doesn’t get sucked up into the gravel vac. same bag cost over $50 in local pet store so this is a great price from amazon.
