Perfect Alternative/Replacement for a Wheel for Syrians
I had originally purchased the regular size (6.5 inch) silent spinner for my new Syrian hamster Maple, as these wheels had always worked for me with my Syrians in the past. However, once she grew to her full size (I got her when she was still relatively young), she stopped running in it as much. I wouldn’t classify her as much larger than the average Syrian. I noticed she was arching her back a lot and sometimes would opt to run on top of the wheel instead of inside. I did some research and discovered that the ASPCA minimum recommended wheel size for Syrian hamsters was 8″, and of course, no one seemed to make a good wheel in this size.I had thought about purchasing the 12″ silent spinner, but when I saw how big and bulky it was (it’s about 14″ tall with the stand – too big even for my bin cage) I opted to try something else. From what I was reading, flying saucers are either hit or miss with hamsters. Maple, however, wasted no time in exploring how this flying saucer works and was running on it almost immediately. It took her a little while to learn how to run on it without being flung off, but now she is just fine. And no more arching back! It is not too noisy as of yet, although I’ve heard just greasing it up after awhile remedies the noise anyway. It is just as silent as the silent spinner (which is not completely silent either); the most noise you can hear is the pitter-patter of her feet on the surface, which can’t be avoided no matter which wheel/saucer you choose.Although I’ve heard others say their hamsters prefer wheels and they use the saucer as an alternative, I completely removed the other wheel from her cage as it was just too small for use. So whether you want to use the flying saucer as a wheel alternative or as a replacement as I did, I definitely recommend trying it out!**I would caution any potential buyers into looking into the size of their cage before purchasing. If you have anything other than a large rat cage or a bin cage, I recommend looking at the dimensions. This product takes up A LOT of floor space; it takes up a little more than half of my standard size bin cage with enough room around all sides for her to walk around it comfortably. Just make sure your cage can fit it!**UPDATE: After about 8 months of use, this saucer completely broke. It was great while I had it. I am not sure why it broke, but I decided not to purchase another one. Instead, I bought a Senior Wodent Wheel.

Quiet and fairly sturdy
This wheel is great for our pet hedgehog. She runs on it every night and as long as itâs not scraping against the side of the cage itâs pretty quiet.Cleaning is fairly easy – warm water cleans the plastic quickly. Our hedgehog tends to poop and pee while running on it so depending on degree of dirtyness you may have to soak for an hour to clean.One caveat – I dropped it while cleaning once – it landed on the side of the wheel and the plat I cracked. Had to replace. So be careful not to drop.

Great Product Overall
I purchased this wheel for my Syrian Hamster because I had heard of its many benefits, and it has honestly worked out very well so far! Besides having to learn how to use an unconventional wheel and being thrown off a few times, she’s loving it now. It’s quite large and takes up a fair amount of room in my hamster’s cage, but it’s very quiet! Her cage is in my bedroom, so this was a MUST and it does not disappoint. You will hear their little feet, but little to no sound from the saucer. It’s fairly easy to clean, which is good because if your pet likes to go to the bathroom while running, you’ll be doing lots of that! Everything, including poo and bedding, stays on the saucer and collects in the middle.As I’ve read in other reviews, however, my wheel came in less than perfect condition. I instantly noticed a sizable crack when I took it out of the box and after a little over a week of my hamster using it, it’s begun to warp. I inspected it fairly well when it arrived and I’m 99% sure that it did not arrive warped; my assumption is that heavy usage and maybe even cleaning with hot water are the culprits. I feel like I can live with the crack as it is seemingly cosmetic and the product still functions.Overall, great product but manufacturing and/or packaging could use some work.

These break constantly
I love these wheels for about a week or two, until they start to break. I like to use these for my hedgehogs because they’re easy to clean & easy for them to climb onto/off of. I bought these in the first place because they are quiet & don’t squeak or bang against the cage. I also used to buy these a few years ago when I had chinchillas & never had these issues so i’m not sure what’s changed, especially since chinchillas tend to be heavier than hedgehogs.I initially bought two of these for my two hedgehogs. The first one broke after the first month & began to squeak loudly and constantly. The reason for the squeaking is that the plastic pieces that hold the wheel together begin to wear down SUPER fast once the wheel starts getting used. I left it in the cage and after another two weeks the whole apparatus was so broken down that the wheel wouldn’t even stay connected to the base. A week after that the second wheel started having the same problem. I bought two more because I couldn’t find another type of wheel that I thought would work well for them – one of them was squeaky right out of the box. And i’m not talking about normal rodent wheel squeaks, it’s LOUD & the parts that are squeaking together have already started wearing down after only 2 weeks of use. I added some padding to reduce the rubbing of the plastic pieces & hopefully extend the life of the wheel a bit but now they are hard to clean because the padding needs to dry out each time.

Perfect! I’m using this for my Syrian hamster, probably shouldn’t be used for anything to much larger tho! Very silent wheel and doesn’t keep me up at night because it barely makes a sound. Seems sturdy as well.

I bought this for my teddy bear hamster, he loves it! Very quiet too. Not sure if this is good for larger critters (chinchillas) but seems to work well for hamsters.
