A nice hood for a nice price!
Update: I now have purchased 4 of these hoods for all my bearded dragons and uromastyx terrariums with zero issues. The oldest one is 2.5 years and the newest is a little over a 1 year. Overall a great value for the price.I purchased this to get more full coverage for UVB lighting for my tank. The fixture gets warm but not hot. The plastic feels thick and durable and the switch likewise is well-made. I will note there is no glass to protect the bulb and electrical elements from damp conditions, so long as your not planning on laying the fixture directly on top of an extremely humid tank you shouldn’t encounter any issues at all. I would recommend it, particularly for desert dwellers like bearded dragons. Be sure to get the right bulb for your reptile’s needs – if you’re using UVB bulbs, be aware of the distance that your animal needs to be from the lamp to get enough UVB and plan the height of your fixture accordingly. And also be aware that ‘full spectrum’ bulbs do not provide adequate UVB (if any at all) for many reptiles. On a side note, this fixture takes T8 18″ tube lights. Zoo med’s brand UVB bulbs (Reptisun) are currently considered the best bulbs for UVB output, Amazon sells them as well for cheaper than the stores.

    DEFECTIVE-DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY
I have notified the seller who does take returns and is responsive-thank you. It’s the product not seller that is at issue here. TOO MANY reviews gave the warning but I took the chance because the price was good. I even expedited shipping for our Bearded Dragon needed the light to stay healthy. ZOO MED should take full responsibility and pull this product from the market before other animals become sick from defective hoods. Had it less than 2 weeks. Since we opened the box and set up, the hood did not work properly, but the perfectly NEW working bulb would turn on if we fiddled it a bit. It would turn off automatically with our timer but in the morning would not. SO again we would have to move the bulb a bit back and forth so it would turn on. I should NOT have to do that with any product, new or old. Today the hood stopped working completely. I have to go to the pet store and purchase something in the interim. I do not trust the ZOO MED HOODS. This was our second one. The first also stopped working but I thought it may have been because we had it a few years. Now I see form the reviews that more than the average, one is defective. Not a trust worthy product at all.

    Perfect for what I Needed
Didn’t come with the 5.0 bulb that was advertised but I didn’t need the 5.0 and needed a 10.0. So it wasn’t a waste to me.

    Great so far
After reading some of the reviews, I was a little afraid to purchase this. Being in need of a UVB light badly, and reading about the cases of blindness in reptiles caused by compact bulbs I decided to go with a standard flourescent bulb.It arrived in a large cardboard box, tightly packed with brown paper and those huge air bag/bubble wrap things. It was packaged very securely. I put a bulb in, plugged up the hood, and flicked it on. It’s been working like a charm nonstop so far. I run it about 10 hours a day for my bearded dragon. It’s even been knocked off the tank twice by my cats and fallen about 3 foot to the floor. It still works great.

This model is not worth the money
I can’t speak for the 30 and 36 inch models, but as far as I’m concerned this product is faulty and unreliable. I purchased this product 8 months ago and upon its arrival it would only turn on about 50% of the time. Dissatisfied, I sent it back to Zoo Med (yea YOU PAY SHIPPING FOR THIS, no reimbursement), waited ~2 weeks and was sent an email stating that they could find nothing wrong with the product and were going to send me the same light back with the bulb I put in it and an additional bulb “in the interest of customer service”. I told them keep the extra bulb and give me a new hood, they refused. I don’t think that’s great customer service…I eventually got the hood to work on a regular basis (with the original bulb, not the new one they sent with it) and hooked it up to a timer to turn on and off. It always took 5-10 minutes before it would turn on after the timer switch signaled it to do so. After 8 months, it’s no longer functioning. I’m going to replace the starter and if that doesn’t fix the problem, this things going to the recycling bin. Look for something better, even a simple fixture and ballast at Lowe’s or Home Depot is better than this heap of junk.

    Great Reptile UVB/UVA Bulb Hood!
I have used a regular fluorescent bulb fixture from Wal-Mart and there really is no comparison. Spend the extra money for an actual reptile hood for these reasons:1. Compared to a regular fixture, the reptile hood is closed all the way around the bulb which directs more light into your reptile enclosure.2. The bulb fits better in the hood and won’t go out occasionally like a regular fixtureI have two of these hoods in different sizes. My larger one has been in my possession for 3 years and I have never had an issue with it.

    First one broken
Item came right away but the box the hood came in was pretty banged up. Tried the light with 2 different bulbs and it didn’t work at all. Returned and bought the same item at a local pet store and it works great. It is a good hood for the purpose, just be careful that the packaging isn’t too banged up, item is kind of fragile.

    Damaged & doesn’t work.
I bought this for my bearded dragon. It was recommended by someone, and I was told it would come with the 5.0 bulb. The photo of the product even says it includes the bulb. The box I received looked completely different. No bulb included. So I was already annoyed with that. Then upon opening it – the hood had several deep dents in it, and one of the ends where the you insert the bulb was hanging loose. So I submitted for a replacement and another one was sent out.The replacement also came in a different box than what is shown, and it also does NOT include the bulb. The replacement also will not turn on at all – so now I’m left waiting on a refund because at this point I am over it.

Got the new improved model. Works quite well. At least this model has a 3 prong plug. The original is only a 2 prong.

Keeps lagging for the start. I have to give a little tap on it so that it works and even with that, it lags. Have to send it back and will never buy again.

It’s not bad, it works fine. It’s just that when I was purchasing it, they used the wrong cover photo! They originally used the cover photo of the older ReptiSun Terrarium Hood which comes with the lights. When I received the product, it turned out to be the newer Terrarium Hood which works well! But just a bit disappointing it wasn’t the one that was shown.

I was worried it wouldn’t work based on what other reviews were saying but it works great! Makes a small buzzing noise but it’s easily forgettable.Definitely would buy again.
