Update 3 years later: we tape the lock tab down so it doesnât lock by accident – it started not âclickingâ snuggly into place in year 2, but this isnât really an issue as we rarely use the lock. Overall the door is still working fine after 4 years of use.This review was written one year after door was installed in a polyurethane and aluminum exterior mobile home door.Pros:- telescoping frame makes for easy, snug install. DO USE TEMPLATE & FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!- No noticeable drafts so far- brush lined opening and flap makes for very quiet operation; if you’re nearby you can hear it -makes kind of a swish/click sound when cat goes in or out but it’s not loud at all- door closes quietly and gently – no magnet to startle cat or catch his tail- plenty big enough and sturdy enough for 15 lb cat- the hard plastic door stays shut and didn’t let in the elements during stormy weather this winter- we almost never use the features of the 4 way lock, but it’s convenient to have those optionsI thought it was going to be an issue that the top porch step outside the door is lower than the interior floor, meaning cat has to kind of jump up a bit to come in, but he doesn’t have any problem with it at all (although I’m sure this set up wouldn’t work for all cats – especially older ones).Con:- This isn’t really a con, but I can’t tell which setting is which on the 4 way locking mechanism. This is not an issue since it’s rarely used and I just check to make sure I got the right setting when I do use it.Tips: If you don’t feel totally comfortable with the instructions for the install, or don’t know how to use the required tools, have someone else install the door – especially if it’s going in an exterior door because improper installation can result in drafts, escape of heated or cooled air from inside the house, and damage to your door. Follow the instructions, use the template. Show the cat the door, and how it opens and closes, but don’t try to push or pull him through it

Good Size and Easy Installation
I’d describe the size of this unit as large. Not huge, but perfect for a normal sized, or in my case, slightly chubby cat. I can’t imagine putting in a smaller one unless your cats are real small and you want to keep other small dogs from using it. I have a small Beagle and while she could probably squeeze through it, she doesn’t try.I installed this item inside so we could put the litter box in the attic, for obvious reasons, so the locking/one way mechanism is not used. It seems to work well, but not sure how long it would hold up if used regularly. The door is well built though so I suspect it would last a long time.The unit was easy enough to install in a hollow core interior door. I installed it about three inches from the bottom using the included template and cutting the hole with a jig saw. The only issue I had was the four screws they provide seemed a bit over-sized and were very difficult to screw in. About half way in the pressure required to keep going felt like it would probably have stripped out the heads, so I ended up backing them out and going down a size. I think they are 10s and I used 8s and they worked fine.Other than that, it was a no brainer.Good value for the money.

Edit: I purchased this in late Jan. 2012. It is still going strong to this day! Occasionally I have to wipe the door flap with a damp cloth and the plastic frame as well. Great purchase, I didn’t know what I’d do without it 🙂 My boy cat is now 25 pounds, but still fits through the door with no issues at all.——————————————-I have two cats, both domestic shorthair. The boy cat is 16 pounds and the girl cat is 9 pounds. Long story put short, I got tired of meowing at my bedroom door and got tired of getting up to open the bedroom door. So I had this installed and I just love it. The boy cat who is 16 pounds easily fits through with no issues at all.I went to local pet stores and the cat doors they have available are ridiculous, so expensive, no big sizes, and not many features. So I purchased from Amazon instead.The cat door is really easy to install, just follow the instructions. Or just trace the provided template onto the door and measure no more than 7 inches from below the floor + door. This is so the cats can place their paws onto the floor as they exit or enter.I use the lock features because sometimes I don’t want them in my bedroom messing around and knocking things over. The lock feature is also nice if you want to trap them and get them into a pet carrier to see a vet ;)My only complaint about this is that the magnet is sometimes messed up, so as they leave or enter the room, the door swings back and forth and then stops right before the magnet. It happens occasionally, but not too often.Overall a really nice product and I highly recommend it!

Installed on interior hollow door, works perfectly, looks nice and is a good size.
This door was perfect for our cat. We installed it inside the house so she could access the bedroom, we use a single room air conditioner on hot summer nights so leaving our door open for her would defeat the purpose of cooling the room. She’s not overly tubby, about 13 pounds, but we decided to go with this bigger door because we thought it would be more comfortable for her than those 5×5 inch doors. It took her about 2 days to figure out how to work it. We tried to coax her but eventually just left it up to her, she was determined to pull it open with her paw instead of go through it head first. Once she figured it out it was a breeze and she uses it without issue now. Installation was super easy, we have a hollow core door so it was easy to cut. The template included fit perfectly when preparing the door. I didn’t even need to take the door off the hinges. I tested the lock function and it works well but we never use it, we don’t want to confuse her with it sometimes being open and sometimes not.I’m super happy with this door, it was a little more expensive than other cat doors I was looking at but in the end I’m glad I went with my gut and purchased this one.

I put this in myself, which impresses me, and it works. 🙂 Very slick! Good directions. The clear flap helped in having the cats figure out how to use the door. With being able to see through to the other side the cats started sniffing and pushing on the door. I like that I can see who is coming in the door before they are in. As well, there is lots of room for my big cats down to the kittens, using the door. 🙂 Great stuff!! I’m very pleased. I’m ordering a couple more of these to accommodate my feral kids. 🙂

I placed this in a side closing window, and I had to place towels and other items around it as it was not exactly the right size for the space. It was easy to use once I had it in, and I loved that there were several options, rather than just opened or closed.Once it got a little cold out in the fall this door was fairly good at keeping out the lower temperatures, but after awhile I had to take it out as it was getting too cold, but by this time the cats did not want to go out anyways!I haven’t tried to install this in a door, but I am glad it was so easy to adapt to what I needed. Also cats fit through it well (they are 8 and 11lbs). It took them awhile to get used to going through the door but once they got the hang of it they loved the freedom it gave them!

Its a good gate and no surprises putting it in or having the pets put it to use. Its just very overpriced for what it is, but that seems to be the nature of anything pet related. Its as overpriced as any other pet door. This is being used on an internal door – I would look for something more insulated or substantial for an exterior gate.

This was our second purchase of the “Tubby Cat door” – after 7 years, the insulating strip around the edge of the first door wore out (3 cats) and we got a new door to keep the cold out of the basement. (Prairie winters are cold).Excellent product, very sturdy and easy to install. We cut a piece of plywood to fit a basement window and installed the door in the plywood.Highly recommended!
