The Nicholson farrier rasp file is 14″ long and has a rectangular shape with American pattern rasp-cut teeth on one side for aggressive material removal and coarse (also called bastard) grade double-cut American pattern teeth on the other side for rapid removal of material with a rough finish. The rasp’s density of six teeth per row provides a smoother finish than horse rasps with five teeth per row. The file has single-cut teeth on the edges for smoothing. A handle is forged on the end of the file, with cushion grip on the handle and tip for comfort.
Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth are single rows cut diagonally across the width of the file. Double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions. American pattern files have three coarseness grades. Coarse, also known as bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. Medium, also known as second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. Fine, also known as smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium), and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), offering a smoother finish than equivalent American pattern files. For Swiss pattern files the length of the tool is the length of the blade, not counting the tang, which is the pointed end fitted for a handle; for American pattern files the length of the tool is its entire length, including the tang.
Nicholson manufactures hand tools and power tool accessories. The company is headquartered in Sparks, MD.

Awesome And Powerful Tool For Woodworking
I really like Nicholson files. On one side of the rasp it is a Very Aggressive File.On the second side is an even More Aggressive Rasp.Along both edges are “Mill Mark” file features.I don’t work on horses, so I can’t review any Farrier application of this rasp.I do work on wood and other softer materials (i.e.: plastics, fiberglass, etc.).If you’ve never used one of these Rasp’s on wood before, then I’ll tell you these are great for:Quickly fitting wood pieces together.Removing ragged edges after saw cuts.Breaking or rounding edges of “Rough Lumber.”Or with the edge file teeth, quickly and easily cutting grooves or notches. My last Ferrier’s Rasp was stolen, so this is a replacement. This Nicholson Ferrier’s Rasp is well made, SHARP, and easy to use because of the orange grip surfaces.I recommend this fully.

Must have for every horse owner
Good basic rasp to have. Got this to help upkeep my horses hooves between trims and love it. Does its job and is very affordable. I’m very small and have draft horses, so needed something that would do a lot of the work for me without me having to put too much effort in. Previously, I had always used old rasps that my farrier didn’t need anymore. Switching to this I found out what I have been missing out on. This rasps down their hooves with very minimal effort. The coarse side I found is a little more difficult to use that the other, but I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it eventually. Would definitely buy again, but I doubt I will have to for a long time. My only wish is that it came with a better handle.

Great rasp!
Good value easy to use!

Good value for the money.
I use my rasp for bow (as in archery) making, not horse maintenance, and for that it works very well. It’s very aggressive at removing wood and has greatly sped up my work. It leaves a fairly rough surface, but I can smooth that out quickly with a spokeshave or a finer rasp. For the money, it’s a good buy.

Great to Have on Hand Between Blacksmith Visits
This is a high quality rasp: sharp, durable and easy to use.It is really comfortable for an amateur. If you do your own trimming or have to clean up a foot between blacksmith visits, it is especially well balanced for someone who doesn’t do this kind of work every day.So far, the rasp has held up to several trims but I’m considering buying another one just to have a spare. There are no intentions of going back to a traditional handle rasp.

Use this for sculpting wood
It’s a big, coarse, beast of a rasp. I’m using it to rough shape a large wood carving, which seems to be a perfect use for this tool. The ends are covered with a shrink wrap soft plastic, which could be better, but you should be wearing gloves anyway.

Not as good as the competition
I got this for my daughter who trims her 2 horses. She usually uses a red tang, but it was getting dull, so I ordered this one, since the red tang wasn’t available at the time. She tried it and went back to using the dull red tang, which she said worked better than this new one.

Calluses on feet up to 1/2″ thick ????
Cut it in half, welded a simple handle on it. I work outdoors, in boots all year long. Calluses on my feet get thick, and hard. Take a hot bath, and use this tool, ( as modified to 6″) after your feet are clean and soaked. Takes calluses off perfectly. Feet like a kid again. I got sick of messing around removing calluses the HARD way. Now, I remove them safely, as needed.

I waited to write this review as I wanted to see how it compared to my other rasp that I bought and how it stood up to the test I was going to put it under. I love this rasp much better than my Heller Black Master Rasp for my miniature horse’s ridiculously hard hooves. Not only are these hooves hard but this rasp is also taking a beating keeping down the fast growth as well that it’s being used almost every day. So far it’s staying sharp and standing up to the challenge! I definitely will be buying more of these.

Nice, sharp rasp. My go-to for hoof trimming. Can’t beat the price – this rasp is easily on par with rasps that are more than double the price.

Very good rasp and worth the little bit extra than I was originally intending to spend. I work on the shape of my horse’s feet in between farrier visits and this makes the job easy.
