Reptiles rely on external heat sources to elevate their body temperature. Zilla Heat Mat Terrarium Heaters provide warmth for reptiles to absorb from their surrounding environment in order to maintain and thermo-regulate heat used for daily activities, appetite and digestion. Carbon fiber heating technology efficiently radiates infrared waves creating uniform heating with no hot spots. Carbon fiber is an energy-efficient method for heating with no wires that might become pinched or broken. Each unit has adhesive backing and is low voltage with a maximum temperature of 113F. The material properties restrict it from getting warmer and remove the need for a thermal switch, which often fail.

Customers say

Customers find the heat mat works well for 50-gallon tanks and fits 65-gallon terrariums perfectly, while also being reliable and easy to apply. However, the adhesive quality is problematic, with customers reporting that it stops sticking and degrades quickly. Moreover, the functionality and warmth delivery receive mixed reviews – while some say it heats up fast, others mention it never gets very warm. Additionally, opinions on value for money are divided, with some considering it a good price while others find it barely worth the cost.

    Works for my hedgehogs!
I bought 2 of these for my African Pygmy hedgehogs, housed separately in plastic bins. In the past, I’ve moved them out of the sun room in the colder weather into the guest room with a ceramic heater running 24/7 to keep the ambient temp between 70-73f. I’ve also used Hot Hands, which get costly over the course of a winter as well as heat lamps. Human heating pads turn off after about 2 hours and aren’t practical, so I decided to give these a try since the 6×8″ mats seemed a good alternative. I wasn’t interested in the adhesive aspect since I do move the bins for cleaning and didn’t want to deal with cords. When they arrived, I peeled the adhesive off – and I can’t address the issue as to whether it’s good or not (apparently it’s not from the reviews, although it was a very sticky mess to remove). The bins are light enough that I just sat them on top of the mats. They seem to put out just the right amount of heat. Juno and Bailey each give the mats 2 quills up. I’d recommend them for African Pygmy hedgehog owners. I should note that I do not use igloos or huts for the hedgies – they sleep in little nests they make out of pieces of fleece. I’d be concerned about these heating up an igloo so much that the hedgies wouldn’t stay in it; making the mats useless.

    As always, Zilla comes through
Dont get me wrong, I really do love zoo med brand items a lot. But the 2 zoo med heat pads were inconsistent with their heat and the adhesive was….well, not very good after about 2 weeks. Zoo Med and Zilla are always my go to brands so for this particular item I decided to try Zilla. And I honestly couldn’t be happier. Adhesive seems to be holding up well, and with the same thermostat I was using on my other heat pads, I was able to establish a consistent balance in temperature.

    Effective heating mat
This heating mat works more effectively than the zoomed mat I tried. There was a difference of approximately 5° between the two different brands. I have a 75 gallon (48 inches long) hermit crab tank with 10 to 11 inches of moist sand substrate. During the initial set up I put two zoomed mats on the bottom left side and two Zilla mats on the bottom right side. Using a temperature gauge designed to be sunk into the middle of the substrate I found that one side heated to approximately 82 to 83° while the other side heated to 87 to 88°. Once I figured out how warm the substrate was on each side I shut off the zilla side( it was actually too warm and they need to have temperature gradation in their substrate) and installed two zilla heating mats on the backside of the tank above the substrate. The room the tank is kept in is 68° and with these four mats in the before mentioned positions the tank stays at 78° with approx 85% humidity. The only negative is that I could not get the mats to stay adhered, either brand, on the underside without taping the cord and part of the mat itself into position. If you are buying heating mats I would recommend looking into multiple brands as some can be insulated and some cannot as they become fire hazards. I have been using these for a little over a week and so far have not had any major problems with them.

My ball python gives it 2 thumbs up
It works really, however…… Someone needs to figure out how to get these things to stick to the underside of the tank better. I have been using these things for my reptiles for years. The problem I have is that I attach it then check back in a few days and it is dangling there. So I came up with a plan. If you are like me and have the wooden stands that you buy in the pet store that matches your aquarium size and it has these large cutouts between the bottom of the tank and the top of the stand. That is where the heat pad will just fall through because of the heat warming the glue and the weight of the cord pulling down on it. I have some leftover 12 x 12 ceramic tiles. I just cut it down to about 8 inches on one side and slid it under the tank, but on top of the stand with the heating pad above the tile. It works great. You could probably use something else. I just figured the heat wouldn’t effect the ceramic tile. This way it pushes the pad right up on the tank and also sends the heat up through the tank rather than just warming the storage area down below.

    1 worked, 1 didn’t
I’ve had several of these here and there, but when. I last ordered these, one of them barely even got warm. Very disappointed 😔

    Pyro likes it
Our bearded dragon likes it. We have a low watt 8w unit under one corner and it gives him a place to get warm if he feels like it (while it definitely has little affect on the temp of his 60gal tank it does warm that bottom corner surface and he often goes there and plants his belly to take full advantage. He is digesting his food better and overall saving power as we use the light an hour or 2 less a day on average. The glue attachment isn’t perfect but seems to work OK attached it under the tank).

No good for the UK market unless you use a transformer as this is a 120v unit, we use 240 in the UK, the description should be updated to show this
