A family made the decision to surrender their dog after having her for seven years. The moment they walked out of the shelter and closed the door behind them, their dog’s reaction was so emotional that a shelter worker felt she had to share it. A video posted by @lovinpet.global on TikTok showed the dog standing by the door, staring sadly at the person who worked there.
“She wanted to wait by the door thinking they were coming back,” the video says. “She loved the children, after all, she is a guardian dog.”
The shelter worker gently went to comfort her, knowing how heartbreaking this moment must have been. “These dogs go through so much pain when they are surrendered,” she said, describing the emotional toll.

Of course, there are times when giving up a pet can’t be avoided—due to illness, financial struggles, or emergencies. But it should always be the last resort. If you know that caring for a dog might not be possible in the future, it’s better not to adopt one at all. And if rehoming becomes necessary, finding a foster or forever home yourself is far better than leaving a dog in a shelter.
