Aggressive? Not Even Close—Dakota the Wolfdog Finds Love and Changes a Rescue Forever
Kim, the founder and president of Arctic Fox Daily Wildlife Rescue, has spent years caring for captive-bred foxes—animals unable to be released back into the wild. But her world took a surprising turn when the New York Department of Environmental Conservation contacted her with a plea for help. A wolfdog named Dakota had just been confiscated from a hoarding situation, and he needed somewhere to go, fast.
Though Kim had no experience with wolfdogs, she agreed to take Dakota in temporarily. When the transport vehicle pulled up and she caught her first glimpse of him, she was stunned. Dakota was massive—and word from authorities was that he was also aggressive. Kim couldn’t help but feel a wave of uncertainty. What had she gotten herself into?
Wolfdogs, a hybrid of a domestic dog and a wild wolf, are known for their intense energy and unpredictability. But the moment Dakota stepped onto Kim’s property, everything shifted. Initially hesitant and resistant, Dakota had to be guided into his new enclosure. Then, something miraculous happened. As if sensing he was finally safe, his posture softened. He approached Kim, not with aggression, but with affection—offering kisses, leaning in for hugs, and proving himself to be nothing like what she was warned about.

Kim, skilled in reading animal behavior, quickly realized Dakota wasn’t a danger. He was misunderstood, traumatized, and desperately in need of connection. That moment marked not only a turning point for Dakota, but for the sanctuary as well. Inspired by his transformation, Kim opened her heart and her facility to more wolfdogs in need.
Today, Arctic Fox Daily Wildlife Rescue is home to several majestic wolfdogs—each with a story, each with a second chance—thanks to one unexpected call and a woman brave enough to say yes.
