In the aftermath of catastrophic flooding that devastated parts of Texas and claimed more than 130 lives, a group of nine young survivors made their way north for a second chance. On Wednesday, nine puppies arrived at PAWS Chicago, a no-kill shelter that has become a haven for animals in crisis.
The puppies’ journey began in shelters across flood-ravaged Texas. While they were not directly displaced by the storm, their transfer was a critical step in creating space for animals that were. The pets were flown to Waukesha Airport in Wisconsin before completing their three-hour van ride to Chicago, where they were warmly welcomed by shelter staff and volunteers.
This marks the second group of dogs brought to PAWS from the disaster zone, thanks to coordination with Austin Pets Alive!, an organization actively working on the ground in Texas. By relocating animals already in shelters, PAWS and its partners allow Texas facilities to focus on reuniting pets separated from their families during the flood.
“We’re really happy to be able to support the area by freeing up really needed space,” said Celene Mielcarek, head of program operations at PAWS Chicago.
PAWS’s disaster relief program began in 2005 following Hurricane Katrina, and has continued to provide rescue support during natural disasters, including last year’s Hurricane Helene and the 2023 storms in Houston. Their ongoing mission has saved hundreds of lives and provided vital relief in times of chaos.
On Monday, another 22 dogs from Concho Valley PAWS in San Angelo, Texas, had already arrived. In total, 31 dogs—from six-week-old puppies to adult dogs—have been relocated to Chicago shelters.
Once at PAWS, the animals received immediate care: vaccinations, microchips, spay/neuter procedures, and medical evaluations. In just a few days, many will be ready for adoption or foster placement. But for now, they’re simply resting and recovering.
“They’re all pretty tired,” Mielcarek said. “They’re all ready for their dinner.”
Volunteer Peter Brown, who helped transport the dogs from the airport, said they were anxious during the ride but quickly calmed down. “They’ll find good homes here,” he said. “And then some family who lost their dog in the floods will get it back.”
