Krypto the Superdog Sparks Surge in Dog Adoptions Following Superman Movie Release
As DC Studios’ newest Superman film soars to success at the box office, it’s not just capes and superpowers captivating audiences—it’s the unexpected heroism of a four-legged friend. Krypto the Superdog, the loyal companion of Superman, has not only stolen scenes but also hearts, inspiring a dramatic nationwide rise in interest around dog adoption since the movie’s debut.
According to the dog-training app Woofz, online searches for “adopt a dog near me” exploded by 513% following the film’s opening weekend. Likewise, “rescue dog adoption near me” saw a 163% jump, while searches for “adopt a schnauzer” rose by an impressive 299%. That last spike directly reflects Krypto’s design, which was modeled after writer-director James Gunn’s own rescue dog, Ozu—a schnauzer-terrier mix. The personal touch adds a layer of authenticity to the character, and audiences clearly took notice.

In the film, Superman—portrayed by David Corenswet—describes Krypto as a “foster situation.” The phrase gains emotional weight in a pivotal moment when Superman and Krypto save each other from danger. It’s a powerful scene that mirrors the deep emotional bond often formed between rescue animals and their adoptive families. This narrative struck a chord with viewers, prompting many to consider adopting a pet of their own.
IHeartDogs interviewed Boston, Massachusetts Superman superfan and local Realtor Ron Carpenito, who said:
“I’ll always been a Man of Steel/Zack Snyder fan, and I definitely appreciate James Gunn going all out to bring his unique vision of Superman to this new generation of fans. For me, Krypto was the best addition to Superman’s story—something we haven’t seen on the big screen before. Krypto’s energy, love, and loyalty to Superman remind us why dogs are truly ‘Super’man’s best friend.”

The surge in interest is being welcomed by animal shelters and advocates who work tirelessly to find homes for neglected animals. But they are also urging caution. “Adoption is a real commitment,” noted Woofz CEO Natalia Shahmetova. “The hype will fade, but your dog will stay. Make sure you’re truly ready to provide the time, training, and lifelong care these animals deserve.”

James Gunn shared the adoption wave on Instagram, calling it “a barrage of blessings.” He noted that while Ozu may be oblivious to his newfound fame, “he’d be proud.” Gunn’s heartfelt connection to his real-life pet has clearly resonated with audiences and elevated Krypto from fictional sidekick to real-world inspiration.
For animal lovers and rescue workers, this newfound attention on adoption offers more than a feel-good story—it’s a chance to change lives. Krypto’s influence proves that sometimes, the greatest heroes don’t wear capes—they wear collars.
