Doberman Throws Ultimate Shade After Sleepover with Grandparents, And the Internet Can’t Get Enough
Jess McLaughlin from Calgary thought her 2-year-old Doberman, Arlo, might miss her—at least a little—when she left him overnight with her in-laws to attend an Edmonton Oilers playoff game. Instead, she returned to a scene worthy of a soap opera. Arlo didn’t just snub her, he made sure the whole internet knew about it.
In a now-viral Instagram clip posted to Arlo’s account, the Doberman is seen cuddled up next to his grandma, completely ignoring McLaughlin. He shoots her a cold side-eye, then sweetly rests his head on grandma’s lap, driving home the point: she’s been replaced. The caption nailed it: “That head turn at the end? Sorry, your time is up mom.”
The video has exploded online, racking up over 6.2 million views and more than 207,000 likes. Viewers can’t get enough of Arlo’s perfectly-timed drama. One commenter quipped, “They act like they don’t know what home is when they get with grandma.” Another added, “That dog is a Libra. Once you’ve disappointed us, we’re done with you.”

McLaughlin admits Arlo might have been giving her the cold shoulder, but it’s all love. “Arlo is like a grandpup to my mother-in-law,” she explained. “He follows her everywhere and gets spoiled nonstop.” Whether it’s knitting cuddles with grandma or sneaking treats from grandpa, Arlo clearly enjoys the grandparent lifestyle.
Despite the icy welcome, McLaughlin isn’t holding a grudge. She laughed off the sass, knowing Arlo was just expressing his very big Doberman feelings. She also shared that when grandma and grandpa started packing to leave, Arlo’s mood flipped—he didn’t want them to go. “He knows what bags mean,” she said. “And he wasn’t ready for the fun to be over.”

Arlo’s antics remind us all just how expressive dogs can be—and how quickly they figure out who doles out the best snacks and snuggles. Whether you call it betrayal or just a temporary case of grandma-itis, it’s safe to say Arlo knows how to stir drama—and steal hearts.
