Massive South African Mastiff towers over his human sisters in viral photos
It’s no surprise that photos of an enormous dog named Barney and his two younger human sisters have recently taken the internet by storm. Barney is, in fact, a Boerboel, also known as a South African Mastiff. This powerful breed was originally developed by farmers to protect remote villages from predators such as lions and leopards. While their size is impressive—males can reach up to 27 inches in height and weigh between 150 and 200 pounds—they are also known for being agile, intelligent, and fiercely loyal.
At just two years old, Barney already weighs an impressive 176 pounds (80 kilograms in his home country of Australia). Despite his massive size and muscular build, Barney’s dad, Phil, revealed that he’s actually quite picky about his food. “Barney is a fussy eater and surprisingly doesn’t eat all that much, as you can see from his lean muscle,” Phil shared.
Barney’s family adores him, and he’s often seen snuggled up on the couch with his little sisters. Bed-sharing, however, can be a challenge, as the giant pup tends to take up most of the space. His sweet and calm nature makes him the perfect companion for the girls, and it’s clear from the photos that their bond is strong.
When Phil shared pictures of Barney online, the reaction was overwhelming. The internet quickly fell in love, with the post racking up more than 17,400 likes and countless comments. People from around the world expressed their admiration for Barney’s striking looks, gentle demeanor, and obvious affection for his human family.
Beyond his impressive stature, Barney has the temperament that makes Boerboels so cherished by those who know them well—protective yet loving, watchful yet affectionate. His presence brings both security and comfort to his family, proving that even the largest dogs can have the softest hearts.
