Beekeeper Survives 500 Stings While Trying to Save His Dog from “Killer Bees”
Africanized honey bees, often called “killer bees,” are notorious for their aggressive defense tactics. Unlike their European relatives, these bees can swarm in overwhelming numbers, chasing perceived threats for long distances. Encounters with them can turn deadly in a matter of seconds—and for one experienced beekeeper named Richard, an attempt to save his dog became the fight of his life.
Richard had worked with bees before, but nothing could have prepared him for the moment a swarm descended on his beloved dog, Gretta. Without hesitation, he rushed in to protect her, trying desperately to drive the bees away. In the process, he became the target of the swarm, suffering an estimated 500 stings. Despite his valiant efforts, Gretta tragically did not survive.
His son, Stephen Mockabee, vividly remembers the chaotic aftermath. Emergency responders were everywhere, moving quickly to stabilize Richard before rushing him toward the U.S. border for medical care. “It was a miracle getting my dad back to the US border,” Stephen recalled. The image of his father slumped in the front seat, unconscious, is something he says will stay with him forever. “You never see your parents in a terrible light. It’s always in a good, heroic area. But seeing him passed out definitely weighs a lot on me.”

Now, two months later, Richard is still recovering in a California rehabilitation clinic. His injuries left him struggling with basic tasks—walking, eating, and even speaking have required intensive therapy. Yet the most difficult challenge has been emotional: coping with the loss of Gretta. Stephen said one of the hardest moments was telling his father the news. “It was very hard to tell him as he was trying to recover and actually use his voice and trying to eat again. He was asking where his dog was.”
While Richard’s physical health continues to improve, the emotional toll remains heavy. His son has asked for continued thoughts, prayers, and, for those able, donations to help with his recovery. “Just out of the kindness of your heart, with donations, that would be fantastic as well,” Stephen said.

Richard’s ordeal is a heartbreaking reminder of the powerful bond between humans and their pets—and the risks many are willing to take to protect the ones they love. His bravery came at a tremendous cost, but his story stands as a testament to devotion, sacrifice, and resilience in the face of tragedy.
