Hope and Spirit: Puppies Saved From Cruelty Case Now Thriving and Ready for Adoption
Two puppies rescued from a Hillsborough County animal cruelty case have made an inspiring recovery and are now ready to find their forever homes. Named Hope and Spirit, the young dogs were taken to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay on August 29 along with their mother, Blessing.
When rescuers first found them, all three dogs showed signs of severe neglect. Blessing’s condition was the worst: she was emaciated, soaked in urine, covered in sores, and tested positive for parvo, a highly contagious and often deadly virus. Despite intensive veterinary care, she was suffering beyond recovery and was humanely euthanized to end her pain.
Fortunately, Hope and Spirit tested negative for parvo and were placed under intensive care. With proper nutrition, medical treatment, and loving attention, both puppies began to thrive. By early September, staff described them as “so full of energy and joy that it’s nearly impossible to snap a clear picture of them; they’re too busy playing and just enjoying being puppies!”
Their rescue was part of a disturbing cruelty case. On August 30, deputies arrested 29-year-old Carla Sanchez Diaz, who had originally claimed she found the dogs abandoned behind a gas station in Lutz. However, inconsistencies in her story, surveillance footage, and witness accounts led investigators to her home on Montana Avenue. There, she confessed to neglecting the animals.

Inside the residence, deputies discovered two additional dogs and five children. Hillsborough County Animal Control removed the dogs, while the Florida Department of Children and Families took custody of the children. Diaz now faces multiple charges, including aggravated animal cruelty, abandonment of animals, unlawful confinement, and child neglect.
While Blessing’s story ended in heartbreak, her puppies represent a powerful reminder of resilience. Thanks to swift intervention and compassionate care, Hope and Spirit have transformed from neglected survivors into lively, adoptable pets.

Their availability marks the beginning of a brighter chapter—one where they can finally experience the safe, loving homes they deserve. Their journey underscores the importance of accountability, rescue, and the lifesaving work of shelters that give animals a second chance.
