Flourite Black Sand is a specially fracted stable porous clay gravel for the natural planted aquarium. Its appearance is best suited to planted aquaria, but may be used in any freshwater aquarium environment. Flourite Black Sand is most effective when used alone as an integral substrate bed, but it may be mixed with other gravels. Gravel modifiers such as laterite are not necessary. Flourite Black Sand is not chemically coated or treated and will not alter the pH of the water. Flourite Black Sand is good for the life of the aquarium and need not be replaced.

Keeps plants alive
Iâve been using this in my 5.5 gal aquarium with two plants, and I love it! I only needed one bag, and it was plenty to fill the bottom and cover my plant roots. My plants have been thriving for years. I do have 5 fish the size of tetras and snails that live with them. I do get some of it sucked up when I do my cleaning, but thatâs bound to happen when youâre doing regular cleaning. I read that a lot of people have this for the life of the aquarium, so itâs a great, quality Investment.

Best brand of aquarium stuff!
Not sure what people are upset about. I washed this sand and then put it in my tank. It wasn’t cloudy at all, but I added Seachem Clarity to settle anything left over, which makes the water cloudy for a few hours or a day. It’s super black until the light is on it, then it has some reflective specs, but it’s all black. I think it looks really nice! I am sprouting some plants to grow in the sand.One bag was perfect for my Fluval Flex 9. I only use Seachem products, definitely quality like everything else Seachem has.

I had second thoughts about adding this sand to my aquarium after reading the reviews and seeing firsthand how long it takes to rinse. I used the âbucket methodâ, meaning I dumped the contents of the bag into my aquarium bucket and stuck the hose in it, tipping the dark dirty water out very carefully, over and over and overâ¦It never did rinse clean but I grew weary so I poured the water off one final time and left the bucket by the aquarium to rest for two days.Once the gorgeous new rocks arrived from Amazon, I did a 50% water change, along with tank maintenance.Using a small mesh strainer received with a rock tumbler, I added the sand. That turned out to be the perfect device for dropping the sand where I wanted. I slowly lowered the strainer into the water, positioned it, and gently tipped the contents.The way this sand moves in water is absolutely amazing and a beautiful sight. It spreads quickly and there was little cloudy residue in the water afterward. I used about half the sand, and plan to use the remainder when the new plants arrive.Definitely worth the time and effort it took to clean, but wish it wasnât necessary. One rinse sure, but this sand is work.Update: The plants seem to like the combination of sand and root tabs, so I have purchased another three bags for our other aquariums. Yes, I am a glutton for punishment apparently.Another Update: 4 times I have purchased this sand. This last time it messed the water up. I have since discovered I can buy something similar at the pet store nearby that is already clean and ready to go straight in the tank. That is the future plan. ðµâð«

CLEANING METHOD IS IMPORTANT
Yes, cleaning this is an undertaking. But if you want the beauty/benefits of high quality sand for your planted tank, that shouldnât matter.The way I did this, and to minimize lost substrate, is throw everything in a large bowl. Then, beneath the bowl, place a cookie sheet or two of various sizes, nested within each other. Works best if the sheets have a dimpled/ribbed pattern.As you drain the water from the bowl, the cookie sheet(s) will act similarly to a gold catcher/sleuth. The heavier particles will collect in the ridges as the dirty water flows over and out. This will save a lot of the sand that spills over by nature. Simply collect it and return to the tank once water runs clear (while actively churning the sand).

Rinse in batches
Much easier to rinse in batches than the whole bag in a bucket.Use a garden hose to gently agitate the sand and dump out the fine particles that float to the surface.Looks great in the tank but it is a little pricey.

Regular Fluorite Black is better
This stuff is super fine and so light that the slightest disturbance sends it swirling up into the water column and eventually settling on tank decor or leaving shallow or bare spots. As others have mentioned, it requires a lot of rinsing and a lot of the material will stick to the surface due to water surface tension. Add this to an existing tank and its going to be cloudy for a few days if not longer. For a new tank, I’d rinse, add to tank, slowly fill with water, and then run a filter with fine floss for several days and perhaps some Accu-Clear or equivalent. It’s also not jet black but more of a really dark charcoal.

The substrate looks amazing but it takes a little bit of work in preparation. I rinsed it 7 or 8 times in a bucket before I put it into my empty aquarium. Then I did the hardscape and live plants before I VERY SLOWLY put the water in with no disturbing the sand. Once full the water stayed crystal clean. The picture was taken right after I was done filling the aquarium with water.

The price is a bit high and one bag wasnt enough but honestly the quality of this sand is worth it. Would buy this Product again for a more planted tank.
