There is always some spillage from the feeder, so having seeds on the ground that won’t germinate is a definite plus. The birds love them and line up to take their turn at my feeder.

5 pounds just isn’t enough
I live in Silicon Valley and use this in a sock feeder. It is covered from dawn until dusk with goldfinches (mostly lesser, but a few American) and the occasional house finch. When it gets low and only a few can feed at a time, they get a bit scrappy over it. They are CRAZY about this stuff. I refill the feeder every other day, and it is COMPLETELY empty when I do so. The largest bag I have been able to find is 15 pounds. I (and the goldfinches) would love a 40-pound bag.
