Read on to learn about Nuheart for Dogs & Valuheart for Dogs, two of the generic alternatives to popular brands containing ivermectin that can help you keep your pet protected from heartworm disease, while costing considerably less.
Nuheart for Dogs
This is a monthly tablet for the prevention of heartworm disease in dogs. It contains ivermectin as the active component. The tablets are water-soluble and small in size for easy dosage and fewer chances of rejection.
- Effectiveness: Nuheart is effective against the tissue larval stages of heartworms within 30 days of the infection. It is important to get your dog tested prior to starting the prevention with Nuheart. Adult heartworms and microfilariae must be treated before giving Nuheart to your pet.
- Dosage: Get the weight-appropriate pack for your dog and administer 1 tablet once a month. Place the tablet on the back of your dog’s throat on top of their tongue and push it down their throat with your index finger, or dissolve the tablet in 5-10 ml of water or other fluid and add it to your dog’s food.
Observe your dog for a few minutes to ensure that the entire dose is consumed. If the entire dose is not taken, give another tablet to your dog. Administer one tablet to your dog once a month, preferably on the same date. If you miss the date and not more than 7 days have passed, give a tablet immediately and resume the monthly dosing program.
- Available packs: Nuheart is available in different weight-curated, color-coded packs.
- Nuheart for Small Dogs up to 25 lbs (11 kg)- Blue
- Nuheart for Medium Dogs weighing between 26 and 50 lbs (11-23 kg)- Green
- Nuheart for Large Dogs weighing between 51 and 100 lbs (23-45 kg)- Red
The packs are available at canadavetcare.com in bundles of 6 and 12 tablets to provide 6-month and 12-month heartworm protection, respectively.
Valuheart for Dogs
Valuheart is a monthly heartworm prevention tablet for dogs and puppies from 6 weeks of age. It contains ivermectin (an antiparasitic that protects against heartworm disease). The tablets are scored, and ivermectin is evenly distributed throughout for accurate dosing.
- Effectiveness: Valuheart eliminates the tissue stage of heartworm larvae (Dirofilaria immitis) that may infect the dog in the month (30 days) before treatment. It is not effective against adult-stage Dirofilaria immitis, but treatment may reduce the number of circulating microfilariae to undetectable levels. However, it is important to get your dog tested for adult heartworms before starting to use Valuheart. Dogs should be free of adult heartworm and microfilariae before starting heartworm prevention.
- Dosage: Get the relevant weight-appropriate pack of Valuheart for your dog and administer 1 tablet every month. Give the tablet to your dog by hand to swallow, or hide it in food to encourage consumption. Observe your dog for a few minutes to ensure the entire dose is consumed. Re-dose if you suspect that the dose has been lost.
Valuheart controls heartworm infection when the treatment is initiated up to 4 months after exposure to infected mosquitoes, provided the monthly treatment is continued for at least 12 months. The final dose must be given within 1 month after the last exposure to mosquitoes.
- Available packs: Valuheart is available in different color-coded packs for weight-wise easy and accurate dosage.
- Valuheart for Small Dogs up to 22 lbs (10 kg)- Blue
- Valuheart for Medium Dogs weighing between 23 and 44 lbs (11-20 kg)- Green
- Valuheart for Large Dogs weighing between 45 and 88 lbs (21-40 kg)- Gold
The packs are available at canadavetcare.com in bundles of 6 and 12 tablets to provide 6-month and 12-month heartworm protection, respectively.
