Arkansas Couple Pleads Guilty in Shocking Attack on Elderly Neighbor’s Dog
A deeply disturbing case of animal cruelty has reached a conclusion in Washington County, Arkansas, where two residents have pleaded guilty to the brutal beating and stabbing of a 16-year-old blind Pomeranian. Robert and Alane Maltese each admitted guilt to multiple charges, including aggravated cruelty to a dog, tampering with evidence, and hindering apprehension or prosecution.
The incident took place on February 16, 2024, in the town of Lincoln. Authorities were dispatched following a call from a neighbor who witnessed the horrifying scene. According to court documents, Alane Maltese allegedly chased the dog while threatening to kill it and then began striking it with what appeared to be a metal bar. Moments later, Robert Maltese reportedly joined the attack, placing the wounded dog in a trash can before repeatedly stabbing it with a pitchfork.
The witness recalled hearing the dog’s agonizing cries. Robert was later found to have placed the injured animal in a bucket inside their home and sealed it with an airtight lid. Despite his initial denial, deputies discovered the dog alive but critically wounded after obtaining a warrant.
The Pomeranian, who was blind and belonged to a nearby neighbor, suffered severe injuries: a fractured skull, multiple broken ribs, a broken front leg, and deep lacerations. Despite veterinary efforts, the dog’s condition was beyond saving and the decision was made to humanely euthanize it.

As part of their sentencing, both Robert and Alane received six years of probation. Robert will also serve four months in jail, and Alane has been ordered to complete 400 hours of community service. The court permanently barred both individuals from owning or living with any animals.
In addition to these penalties, the court ordered the destruction of the items used in the attack—including the pitchfork, machete, and bucket. Prosecutor Denis Dean stated this was done to ensure such weapons could never be used again.

The case has fueled public outrage across Arkansas, reigniting conversations around animal rights and the need for stricter laws to protect vulnerable pets. Advocates are calling for tougher sentencing in cases involving deliberate and cruel abuse, especially when the victims are defenseless senior animals like the one lost in this heartbreaking tragedy.
