Deaf Woman Drives Cross-Country to Rescue Two Deaf Puppies

Tomika and her family—who are also deaf—had recently lost their 19-year-old blind and deaf dog. When they were ready to open their hearts again, they knew they wanted to adopt dogs with similar challenges, ensuring they’d feel fully accepted and loved.

The two puppies were first brought to Smith County Animal Control in Texas in early June. Shelter staff quickly noticed something unusual when the pups showed no reaction to squeaky toys or loud sounds. “We brought them into the lobby area with the squeaky toys, trying to get their attention, and it was nothing,” recalled Amber Greene, the shelter supervisor.

Anjali and Amiya’s story was later shared through Deaf Dogs Rock, an organization that helps find homes for deaf dogs. That’s where Tomika found them—and knew instantly they were meant to be part of her family.

With the help of Pawsitive Place Rescue in East Texas, the adoption was set in motion. The rescue group not only coordinated the transportation but also gathered donated supplies and gifts to help the pups start their new life on the right paw.

Tomika plans to teach both puppies American Sign Language and Japanese Sign Language, helping them understand visual cues and communicate with their family. “Deaf dogs are perfect for us,” she said. “I am excited to teach them to communicate with us.”

Now, Anjali and Amiya are on their way to a forever home filled with love, understanding, and a family that speaks their language. Their journey is a testament to the power of compassion—and a reminder that every dog deserves to be heard, even in silence.
