Beagle Uses Soundboard to Ask Alexa for Music, Wins Hearts Online
In recent years, soundboard buttons have become a popular way for pet parents to give their dogs a “voice.” From requests to go outside to simple phrases stitched together, these devices have sparked viral clips proving just how much our canine companions understand. But one clever Beagle named Jude has taken this phenomenon further—using his soundboard not only to communicate but also to request music from Alexa.
Jude’s owner, Michelle Marotta, explained that the breakthrough didn’t happen overnight. For weeks, Jude persistently pressed button combinations such as “ear want” and “sound want.” At first, Marotta wasn’t sure what he meant, but eventually, she realized her dog was asking for music. She had often used songs to calm him during his puppy years, and now he was asking to hear it on his own. To meet his request, she programmed a button that tells Alexa to play “Jude’s music.” From that moment on, music became his favorite command.
Now, throughout the day, Jude approaches his board, confidently presses his music button, and waits as Alexa fills the room with sound. Videos on his Instagram account, @heyjudethebeagle, show him pressing the button, tilting his head as Alexa responds, and then curling up contentedly on the couch or gazing out the window. The footage has earned over one million views, with fans charmed by the image of a dog orchestrating his own playlists.

In one amusing twist, Alexa once misheard the command and began playing the band Juice instead. To Marotta’s surprise, she fell in love with their music and credited Jude with the discovery. When Juice learned of the story, they expressed both amusement and gratitude, joking that it was an honor to be added to Jude’s playlist—and even more of an honor that he didn’t use his buttons to skip their songs.
Jude’s story adds to growing evidence that dogs are not randomly pressing buttons but instead using them in contextually appropriate ways. Studies have suggested that many soundboard-trained dogs can connect words with experiences, demonstrating a higher level of comprehension than skeptics may assume. Jude’s persistence in asking for music—and his joy when it plays—supports the idea that dogs can truly use these boards to express specific desires.

For Marotta, Jude’s musical requests have become a treasured part of daily life. Watching her dog find comfort through his “button concerts” is rewarding enough, but sharing those clips has also connected her with a large community of fellow dog lovers. Jude may not know it, but his love of music has spread far beyond his home, bringing smiles to countless people around the world.
