Picasso and Newt: Two “Perfectly Imperfect” Dogs Who Beat the Odds
When Picasso and Newt first entered the world, the chances of survival looked slim. Both were born with severe facial deformities that caused many to dismiss them as hopeless cases. Yet, with love, patience, and the right people by their side, these two remarkable dogs not only survived but have grown into thriving, joyful companions who continue to inspire everyone they meet.
Picasso was born with a crooked nose, a condition that made him stand out from the rest of his litter. His unique face drew stares and made some question whether he would ever live a normal life. Newt’s struggle was even more visible—he lost his upper jaw after being bitten by his mother as a puppy. Though their physical challenges were different, both faced a world that often judged them for their appearances rather than their spirits.
Their destinies changed forever thanks to the compassion of Liesl Wilhardt, founder and director of Lovable Dog Rescue in Oregon. Liesl first adopted Picasso, giving him the stability and affection he needed. Years later, she welcomed Newt into her home, uniting two dogs who seemed meant to be together. Their bond was immediate, and from that moment on, they became inseparable.
Life with Picasso and Newt is a celebration of joy. They enjoy long walks, love exploring their surroundings, and even share a sweet hobby: picking berries side by side. Their playful energy and affectionate nature make them favorites everywhere they go. Strangers often stop to meet them, and despite their unconventional looks, the dogs greet everyone with wagging tails and warm hearts.
A young and sweet pit bull was found behind a warehouse in south Memphis with hundreds of bite marks and other severe injuries. Liam, as the rescuers named him, had been used as bait for dog fighting and his abusers are still at large.
Of course, not all reactions are positive. Liesl has encountered people who are startled by their appearances. But she never misses an opportunity to remind others that Picasso and Newt deserve the same love and respect as any other dog. What matters most, she says, is not how they look but how they live. Both dogs embody resilience, showing the world that physical differences do not limit the ability to live fully and happily.
“They have learned to live with their physical limits and can accomplish practically anything they desire,” Liesl explained. “I really like Picasso and Newt; they are both wonderfully affectionate, cheerful, intelligent, and fun dogs.”
Today, Picasso and Newt are more than just rescue success stories—they are ambassadors for acceptance and perseverance. Their journey shows that beauty lies in character, joy, and the bonds we share, not in outward perfection.
