Born With Deformed Legs, Derby the Husky Can Finally Run Free Thanks to 3D Technology
Derby the Husky came into the world facing challenges most dogs never have to endure. Born with severely deformed front legs, he struggled to walk and often injured himself trying to move like the other dogs at the shelter. Though his spirit was strong, his mobility issues made adoption nearly impossible—until a life-changing encounter gave him a second chance.

After traditional solutions like wheelchairs failed to improve Derby’s quality of life, hope seemed to be running out. That’s when Tara Anderson from 3D Systems stepped in. Moved by Derby’s story, Tara decided not only to foster him, but to lead a team of engineers to design custom prosthetics using advanced 3D-printing technology.

The journey was far from easy. Derby’s legs were uniquely shaped, requiring multiple rounds of digital modeling and trial runs. But Tara’s team didn’t give up. They developed low-profile prosthetics that would allow Derby to get used to walking before gradually increasing the height. This careful process ensured that his body could adjust over time, helping him learn to balance and eventually run—something Derby had never been able to do.
