At iHeartDogs, we believe pets are family. And thanks to the compassion and generosity of our incredible customers, that belief is creating real change in the lives of domestic violence survivors across the country.
Because of your purchases and support of our Safe & Together Program, shelters are transforming into safe havens where survivors and their beloved pets can heal—together. No one should have to choose between safety and staying with their pet, and now, more shelters are opening their doors to both.
One powerful example of this impact took place in Fall 2024 at the Iris Domestic Violence Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Before becoming pet-friendly, the shelter often faced heartbreaking choices: either turn survivors away because they refused to leave their pets behind—or ask them to abandon their animals in order to receive protection.
Why is this so critical? In many abuse situations, pets are used as leverage by the abuser, making it even harder for survivors to escape. But with your help, that’s changing.
A Safe Haven for Survivors—Paws Included
In November 2024, the Iris Domestic Violence Center received a major upgrade to support survivors and their pets, including:
-
10 pet-friendly bedrooms
-
2 chain-link play yards for outdoor dog play
-
10 dog kennels (5 indoor, 5 outdoor) in a new kennel building, providing a doggy daycare-like environment
-
2 window-mounted Catios for indoor cats to enjoy safe outdoor views
-
A fully furnished storage room stocked with shelves and essential pet supplies
- Pet enrichment items
These upgrades not only offer comfort—they offer dignity, safety, and healing for those fleeing abuse. iHeartDogs is proud to partner with our incredible customers and GreaterGood Charities in this life-changing endeavor.
