If you find your dog irritated and scratching excessively, there is a chance they have caught a flea or tick infestation. These nasty creatures find their way onto your pet very easily. A walk in the bushes where these ectoparasites usually harbor or contact with an infested animal is enough to expose your pooch to these parasitic infestations. The best way to safeguard your furry pal from the threat of these blood-sucking parasites is to treat the infestations the moment you discover them and prevent them as far as possible.
A variety of options are available for the treatment and prevention of parasitic infestations in dogs. Among them, NexGard chewable stands out due to its dosage convenience and specific parasite coverage. So, while you are evaluating various treatments available for canines, let us walk you through all the information about this popular parasiticide.
NexGard Chewables for Dogs: Monthly flea & tick treatment
NexGard is a soft beef-flavored chewable that treats and prevents flea and tick infestations in dogs and puppies aged 8 weeks and older, weighing at least 4 pounds. This oral treatment:
- kills adult fleas
- treats and prevents flea infestations
- treats and controls black-legged tick, American dog tick, lone star tick, brown dog tick and longhorned tick infestations
- prevents Lyme disease infections as a direct result of killing black-legged ticks
When administered once a month, every month, it helps provide year-round protection to dogs against flea and tick infestations.
The mode of action of NexGard for Dogs
NexGard contains afoxolaner, a powerful insecticide. Exposure to afoxolaner causes hyperexcitation in parasites. The prolonged hyperexcitation due to this exposure ultimately results in uncontrolled activity of the central nervous system and death of insects and acarines. NexGard kills fleas before they can lay eggs and prevents subsequent flea infestations. It shows 100% effectiveness against adult fleas 24 hours post-infestation for 35 days.
How to administer NexGard Chewables?
NexGard Chewables are available in four different packs for weight-appropriate dosage:

- Weigh your dog and select the suitable pack of NexGard.
- Administer the recommended dosage of NexGard Chewable to your dog once every month.
- For dogs weighing above 121 lbs., administer the appropriate combination of NexGard Chewables.
- You may administer the chew with or without food.
- Observe your dog for a few minutes to ensure they consume the entire dose.
- If you suspect that any dose is lost or if your dog vomits within two hours of the dosage administration, give another full dose.
- In case you have missed a dose, administer one dose immediately and resume the monthly dosing schedule.
- Consult a veterinarian if you need help determining the appropriate dosage.
How beneficial is NexGard?
Here is why NexGard is preferred by dog parents:
- Targeted coverage: NexGard contains a single insecticide, afoxolaner, and protects against flea and tick infestations. It is an ideal option for pet parents who are looking for a tailored solution and who do not want to expose their furry friends to multiple insecticides.
- Dosage convenience: This soft beef-flavored chew is accepted easily and is preferred by all dogs. So, it is easy to administer and dogs receive it without fuss.
- Prevention of Lyme disease: NexGard Chew treats and controls black-legged tick infestations. As a direct result of this, it prevents Lyme disease, a tick-borne disease that can cause severe consequences to dogs’ health when left untreated.
Is it safe to use NexGard?
NexGard is safe to use in conjunction with vaccines, anthelmintics, antibiotics (including topicals), steroids, NSAIDs, anesthetics, and antihistamines. However, the active ingredient, afoxolaner, is a member of the isoxazoline class, which has been associated with neurologic adverse reactions. So, use it with caution in dogs with a history of seizures or neurologic disorders.
The safe use of NexGard has not been evaluated in breeding, pregnant and lactating dogs. Consult a veterinarian before administering this chew to such pets.
