I was quite curious when I ordered this and I had hopes that it would be very useful, especially with the novel spray bar.It has 3 sections, two of which contain sponges, and the third houses the pump, and comes disassembled to prevent damage to the plastic while in transit. There is also the 3-part pipe (4 parts if you get the 20W version) to create a modest waterfall effect. Make sure to wash out the filter and remove the sponges and wash and squeeze them repeatedly to remove any dirt. Do not use chemicals to clean it!!! Then you can assemble the filter; the pipe is optional.Make sure that the filter is fully submerged in the water or it will have problems and the pump may break.When I tested this, I had the pipe mostly out of the water and it had trouble pumping water through all of the holes, thus it doesn’t have much “lift” although it has a lot of flow. This is because pressure and flow are not the same thing and are determined by the impeller’s design. Therefore, if you mount this vertically, you should have the spray bar perhaps 1/2″ above the water level; if it doesn’t seem to be stirring up the water and introducing enough air bubbles, you must have an air pump, air stone and tubing to aerate the water.You can mount the filter in several places using the included rubber suction cups – be careful, two of them fit in the slots in the pump section and fall off easily until you assemble it. If you need to do a water change (recommended 15-20% plus replacing evaporated %age), follow these instructions:I recommend that, before you start, you set aside a few cups of tank water to clean the filter parts with, and then stir up the gravel a lot so that the filter can catch as much particulates as possible. After you have drained out enough of the water via a tank vacuum (a simple 3-part suction tube), you should then clean the filter. Don’t forget to replace any chemical-removing media you’ve added as recommended, especially if your tank is quite dirty! Pro tip: after this, instead of buying water neutralizing fluid, you can put the tap water into a clean bucket (it should be dedicated to the aquarium and have never had soap and other chemicals in it), put the filter in for about 30 minutes so that the carbon will remove the chlorine. If the water is colder than your aquarium, stick a water heater in it (get a spare one, or unplug the tank’s heater and quickly transfer it into the bucket, fully submerged) and wait until it gets to the same temperature as the tank’s water so your fish aren’t shocked! Finally, put the filter back in the tank and add the clean water.Because it doesn’t have a venturi valve, only weakly aerates the water, and lacks any activated carbon or any other chemical-filtering media to remove chemicals aside from nitrites (bacteria that build up in the tank and sponges will do that), I don’t recommend this as your primary filter unless you replace the 2nd sponge with filtration media (activated carbon stones or sponge, for example). Otherwise, you’ll need a second filter that has that.

Nice Aquarium Filter
We ordered this aquarium filter for use in our betta tank. The item was easy to assemble. The flow was nice and strong but not excessive. We set our filter unit on the back wall with the provided suction cups. We used the arm pointed downward to add oxygen to the water. It seemed to do a nice job for our application as well. We have used it now for a couple of weeks and we like it. We gave it five stars.

Easy to use and change the flow.
Super easy to use, and the amount of water flow can be adjusted as little or as much as needed. Not sure why someone said there aren’t enough adjustments to change the water flow. It can literally have NO flow at all, if you want it that way, at least with the 10w model.It’s a little loud, but not bothersome. Just a nice hum, and then however strong you have the water flowing out of it. If water is going to flow, you have to expect SOME sound. It’s a nice trickle in our tank.

Loud and not effective
This filter is loud and has a strong vibration that is super annoying and I can’t imagine the fish like it much.When I plugged it it, it spit out a lot of junk which was weird. I let it run over night an the tank was pretty cloudy after 12 hours. I put my older filter back in and water cleared up in an hour.I got this as a back up but I don’t think I’ll even use it for that.
