Affordable and my hens are happy
My local farm supply store sells 3.5 pounds for over $30, which makes it hard to give this as a regular treat. With this 5 lb box, giving my 4 hens a this treat a couple times a week, it lasts over a month. They get really excited when they see me getting it out for them. It’s a good source of protein and fat when they can’t get to bugs in the winter months. I also have a hen with wry neck, and I give her a vitamin E supplement to help with it. With vitamin E being fat soluble, this is the perfect treat for absorption.

Got this on sale and the chickens love it. Sometimes there’s a piece of something in the bag, I really don’t know what it is. Maybe like a old dried leaf inside but it’s such a good price for 10lbs! Ive come across 3 pieces of whatever that is and it’s not that it’s taking up space so I’m getting less worms, just figured that I’d say something about the mystery substance. I’m about half way through the bag, so I’m optimistic that this will last for about a month. We have 10 hens and a rooster. I may go through a bit more just because we’ve just transitioned these hens from another coop. I’m hoping when all of the hens start laying again they have strong eggs and that they become more friendly. I use these as snacks to get the chickens more accustomed to me. Theyre all from a rescue situation. So day by day they’ve started to eat from my hand with the help of these worms:) This beats getting those 1lb bags at Walmart for 11$. We save so much money! It’s so wonderful, such a money saver and helps the flock loosen up:) They smell like worms. They’re good sized larvae and somewhat long. They’ve been lasting quite long considering the over feeding I’ve been doing haha!. They’re like little crispy bits of worms which the chickens like alot:)

I normally use dried mealworms for our songbirds. I steam them, then mix-in some peanut oil, to make them seem more “alive” and to add nutrition. The birds devour them. I thought I’d try these ceause they cost a bit less, and supposedly are even better for the birds.The good: These are larger, they seem “fresh,” and the birds love them just as muc as the mealworms.The bad: As in my title: OMG do these stink. Mealworms are bad enough, when you heat them in a microwave, but these maggots (that’s what they are) are a whole different level of stank.

My chickens love these! I feed about 1 to 2T. Per chicken and when they see or hear me coming they all flock to me lol. I also think it helps with protein and egg production when it gets low to give them the added protein.

Squirrels and raccoons live these balls more than birds. The plastic hanger is easily chewed and ruined. Metal cage is necessary. The balls need some protection to ensure the birds get first access.
