We loved the quality of the packaging. There is only so much to offer with soldier fly larvae, but Ada Farm found a way to bring quality to this chicken flock staple. The vacuum sealed packaging has extended the shelf life of the larvae. The flock couldn’t be happier with them and I’m happy that it’s so easy to store and keep fresh. Larvae from other companies are usually loosely packaged in plastic which isn’t as easy to store.

Black Soldier Fly Larvae can live on an impressive array of unsavory refuse. That these insects convert that refuse into high quality protein, has not been lost on the futurists, or the Chinese. It has been studied already, and what was found, is that the larvae composition, and therefore nutritional value, depends on what they were fed. Better food, more nutritious larvae. In populous Asia, most of the quality food is consumed by humans. It is safe to say the larvae were raised on waste material so unsavory, that it had no other purpose. Having said all that, the idea behind it is genius. You seem to have three choices. Do not feed larvae to your chickens, raise your own larvae, or buy dried larvae sourced from Mainland China. I am using these dried larvae. My chickens now demand them, and the quantity of eggs produced has doubled since I started feeding them to the hens. My older hens that stopped laying, are now all laying again. So far, after one year, the hens are healthy, and the eggs are good. Since I have a variety of vegetable peels and fruit waste I do not compost, I may try to raise my own BSF larvae. The dried larvae sold here are not nasty. They smell good, like grilled shrimp, and they keep well, as long as you keep them dry. I would rather not know what they ate to become such fine, plump, larval chicken food. You do not need to give the hens a great quantity. The dried larvae cost too much to replace more than a few percent of their normal balanced feed.

I buy these for the Eastern Bluebirds that nest in our nesting boxes, but the bluejays and others love them too and the price on Amazon was so reasonable, I don’t mind, everyone can eat!
