Bahamas sand is raw, naturally renewable politic aragonite sand that is up to 98% pure calcium carbonate. The grains are OOLITIC (egg-shaped) and smooth. It is tasteless, odorless and sustainable. Combined with its near chemical purity, size consistency, and small grain structure, Bahamas aragonite possesses numerous advantages making it a superior source of calcium carbonate. Bahamian Aragonite Aquarium Sand is the ideal substrate for marine, reef or African Cichlid aquariums. It is a pure Marine Aragonite sand collected from the crystal clear oceans of The Bahamas, with no harmful tar, organics or impurities. This aquarium sand has unsurpassed buffering capability and helps maintain a natural pH balance of 8. 2 without the constant addition of chemicals. One kg of Marine Aragonite Aquarium Sand offers over 1 million sq. cm of surface area providing a huge space for housing ammonia, nitrate and nitrite reducing bacteria. Marine Aragonite Sand is the ideal grain size for reef tanks, fish tanks, plenum systems and refugees.

Customers say

Customers appreciate the sand quality and pH of the aquarium pond water treatment. They find it to be a nice, fine grain, white or off-white sand that their triops love. However, some customers report that the water remains cloudy or milky after adding the product. There are mixed opinions on cleaning ease, water quality, and value for money.

Hard to find sand, but worth it!
I love cichlids more than anything, but i have nano tanks. After having American cichlids, black ramirezis, i decided to get some variety and get an African cichlid tank started, but Lake Malawi fish are quite big, so i opted for shell-dwellers from Lake Tanganyika, the naughty variety that is, fanged little frog faced ocellatus, i have a thing for little feisty stabby fish, what can i say! These guys, like any other shell-dwellers, love their shells and are mean little excavating machines ! And i know they’re also notorious for reorganizing (aka destroying) any aquascape you’ll love to make them, because who doesnt like having friends that tells you “It’s all wrong, this goes here, that doesnt go there ! Your sense of fashion is horrible!”Anyway, a year ago i could find fine aragonite sand EVERYWHERE. Ive done all the stores i could think of in my area, people only had crushed aragonite., which i kept as a bottom layer under the sand. I figured having a heavier type of sand might help to anchor some of the shells better once they’ve decided where it goes. But at the same time it shows how HUGE of a difference between the Carib-Sea aragonite and this fine sand is.I already ordered another bag, totally worth adding a 2nd layer of this sand, even though the shipping to Canada is more than the retail price. Even worst, while it’s retailed at 20$ give or take on the US Amazon website, its 100$ on the CA Amazon website, so definitively shop your items on both sites before purchasing, the prices fluctuates too much from one seller to another. All i have to say is i LOVE this sand, and i hope my ocellatus likes it too (they’re still going to bite the hand that feeds them anyway!), but DO BE careful and rinse, rinse, rinse, did i say rinse ? I had a tub in the sink, rinsed it in 3 separates batches, each batches at least 5 times with the water constantly running in the tub. I still couldnt see my hand at the bottom of the tub, it’s like i had my hand in a tub filled with milk. I was a little scared after putting the sand in my tank, i couldnt see anything, but it became crystal clear at the end of the day. So really dont be hasty in adding this sand to your tank, take your time to rinse it over and over, the end result are totally worth it!

    Love it!!!
I put the sand in today and the tank with plants looked like the empty one, initially —all dusty, but after turning my filter on and letting the sand settle it looks great! The small window sill tank had sand put in today, about 4hours ago and the more foggy water sand was put in about 30 mins ago.The whole washing helps 100%, but don’t expect to have crystal clear water right away.Lovely fine sand though 🙂

    Great sand
My Triops love this sand. The only issue I have with it, is it does leave white residue and leaves a light fog on top of the sand. But it keeps good ph in the tank so it’s exactly what I need.

Great for Shelldwellers & Raises Hardness
I purchased this this sand for my new shelldweller (Neolamprologus Multifasciatus) tank that I’m transferring my colony to. They absolute love this stuff, it is a nice small grain for them to dig in, move around, and build piles with. The hardness has also noticeably increased. I have only tested with a TDS meter but over a 2 week period the TDS in the water rose from 170 out of the tap to 210 with the sand, which is higher than any of my other tanks and a clear increase in hardness. I expect it will continue to increase as the tank matures and forms its buffer. The sand itself is a very fine grain, white/off white sand. It is much smaller than other African Cichlid substrates I have seen which is a plus for these Multies. It is too fine of a grain to shove a gravel vac in, as all of the sand will also be vacuumed out, so keep that in mind with how that would fit in your cleaning preferences. So far I have easily been able to vacuum debris right off the top by just skimming the gravel vacuum slightly above the sand.I would recommend giving this a good clean as the aquarium took several days to clear up, even after several rinses. All in all, a high quality cichlid sand

    Great Customer Service!
1st I’d like to Give a shoutout to the customer service team, So the bag came with a cut in it and when I grabbed it out the box it ripped more and spilled everywhere I messaged support, and they sent me a replacement right away! outside of that both times the shipping was quick and the product itself is great easy to wash and place tanked cleared up fast as well where in some cases other sands took days to clear up.

    Cloudy
It says it’s for cichlids (i.e. Mbuna, Peacocks, and Haps) but it is impossible to clean or remove the cloudiness from. As we all know Lake Malawi cichlids love to dig, especially the Mbuna. If you add this to your tank it will never be clean or clear. If you have fish that never interact with the substrate then maybe it could possibly work??? If you buy this I can almost guarantee you will regret it.

    Overpriced for what??!!!
So after using this in my tank I thought id make a quick review. Do not use this sand with a wavemaker, the sand is so light and will all go to the other side that the wave maker is on and make the tank look bad. the sand it so light that it also floats up when fish move to fast and it gets sucked up into any filter you may have. if you have shell dwellers, or any African cichlid this is a great sand they love it and its super easy for them to shuffle through their gills. the only thing id say is that for $19 for 10 pounds is almost criminal, this is almost the same quality as play sand and I can get a 20 pound bag for 3$ at my local home depot. This sand would be perfect if it was 20 pounds and you can buy 2-3 but at 10 pounds if I want to fill a 75 gallon its over $130+ for just the sand. in conclusion, I wouldn’t buy this sand unless you like the way it looks and don’t care about the cheaper alternatives.

Triple rinsed? I beg to differ! I’ve lost the better part of five hours of my precious family time due to cloudiness. The sand has been added carefully in a separate container wet, waiting till there are no bubbles, etc. Then, disaster: I waited a whole night, drained the tank, etc., then my filters and everything contaminated with fine telecom powder size residue. My whole tank looks like it’s full of milk, and my fish are in distress, 3 complete water tank refills and draining later to resolve! Deeply disappointed!
