Product Description

Sponge Filter

How Does It Work?

Sponge filter uses bubbles of air from an external air pump, or an integral water pump to draw water through the sponge.

What Maintenance Does It Require?

The sponge need to be rinsed about every 2 to 4 weeks. It’s helpful to wash the sponge gently with water from the fish tank instead of tap water.

It is good to replace the sponge after 3 to 6 months’ usage as the holes of sponge is gradually clogged by the tiny debris.

Key Features Sponge filter provide both mechanical and bio filtration Easy to set up & clean Safe for fish as the filter produces minimal current Includes: 1pc sponge filter

    LOW HUMAN MAINTENANCE!
Editing for understanding sponge use. (FYI, I use my husbands account.) I’m using a whisper 300 air pump on this 150g aquarium (I left the translucent pipe on for this one). The better the air pump the better the sponge’s work! On a nano Petco 3.5g tank I over filter with a 4″ sponge, but I use the air pump it came with. On my Hugger 3D 8-6g nanos I use about a 3″ to 6″ tall sponge with a 150 whisper air pump. On 20g tank I use 5.5″ tall 4″w sponge but it works best with a whisper 300, but a 150 will do, just shorten the distance between the pump and the tank it’s pushing air into. The faster the bubbles the better it cleans. Fish adapt to the flow. The flow can be altered by making the translucent pipe longer shorter or TAKING IT OFF! You can also purchase a air split valve. Pending your preference. Be mindful… restricting the air will limit the sponge’s effectiveness. I hope this helps someone. I wish I knew before trail and error. ;)Over 20 years into this hobby and I am changing my artificially planted 200 gallon aquarium into a planted aquarium. (Seen here: I purchased a few live plants from Amazon, the tree stump with a hole in the top is also from Amazon. See other reviews where I shared under the products I purchased.) This 220 gal sponge filter is awesome. I always over filter my aquariums so they only require a little human physical maintenance. I have an under the tank sump system that’s huge! There is a sock, bio, chemical, and sponge filter under it, and this 220 sponge filter inside all working together to keep this planted tank on schedule for its transition. I love this sponge because its huge! I can use the solid and heavy base to glue plants onto, and I use the sponge to add an extra level to the 2ft tall aquarium by siting caves or plants on driftwood on top of the sponge. When its tim to clean the sponge you can detach the sponge from the base and put it back on the base and put the cave and planted driftwood back on top once done. The sponge has a little gap between where the base and the sponge connect which is awesome for scavengers to keep the area clean or put more plants to help conceal the sponge and still get enough light to grow. This picture was taken after the fish ate, and I am saving the big clean up for after all the plants arrive and are placed in the aquarium. I will update this post like I always do, after some time has passed. This has been about a week, but I have other post reviews that show pictures before the sponge filter was put in. The really long log has artificial plants on it now, but the plants that are floating in the background are going to replace the artificial plants. The best part about the sponge filter is it will work even if you have to clean the sump, you’ll still have the sponge filter going, and vice versa, plus there’s very very little work on the hobbyist side because the water will always be super clean thanks to over filtering the aquarium. I would recommend you get a sponge filter and stay creative and clean! YEAH I CAN GO A COUPLE OF MONTHS WITHOUT PHYSICALLY CLEANING 200 GALLONS OF AQUARIUM WATER WITH OVER 100 FISH AND OVER 100 PLANTS IN IT WITH AN AWESOME VIEW! 🥰 Get one!

When you find these at $35 or less
Best. Filters. Ever. They don’t suck up baby fish. They can be eyeballed for “clean” and they’re pretty easy to get out of the tank to clean. A plecostomus will keep them clean and a lot of other fish will pick copepods, rotifers and nematodes off these. They’re pretty quiet (only the air pump contributes noise) and a Tetra Whisper is nice and quiet They have a airstone in the box and it’s “pretty good” but a glass bead should be its replacement later. These sponges last for years upon years. I use one of these in tanks as small as 30-40 gallons and that “overkill” results in water that is GIN CLEAR and fish do well. I’ll drop two of them with “pretty stout” airflow in a 300 and it works great. Finally, you should be aware that with some really basic parts from home depot, you can engineer an aquarium water powerhead onto these and drive their output to new heights and ridiculous water clarity. They can be “cycled” quickly with a hearty dose of cloudy lake water from the swampy areas.

    Great value
I love sponge filters, and wanted one for an empty spot in my sump. This one if large and just the right size for it, otherwise I would have needed two of the smaller sizes. It may be to large for inside the tank, but great for my needs.
