Aponogeton madagascariensis which is known as the Madagascar Lace Plant, is one of the most highly prized plants in the hobby. Its leaves are broad and long with a very delicate lace appearance. Under the right conditions, these plants will flower regularly in the aquarium. This plant is more demanding than most, but is well worth the extra effort. Plant the Madagascar Lace Plant singly in the mid-ground part of the aquarium as a focal point. Trim any dead tips on these plants, to inhibit the entire leaf from decaying. Do not allow algae or any other debris to settle on or within the leaves. Provide a high amount of light in the range of 3 to 5 watts per gallon, using full spectrum (5000-7000K) bulbs. Reproduction with this plant occurs through bulb separation, or formation of seeds after flowering. Allow the new plant to develop a root system and immature leaves prior to separating it from the mother plant. At that time, it can then be planted in a different location. The Madagascar Lace Plant benefits from regular additions of CO2, iron rich fertilizers, and trace elements. It is shipped in its bulb form and will not have fully developed leaves. Under the right conditions, the leaves will quickly take form. ……………Care Level: Difficult Lighting: High Placement: Mid-ground Water Conditions: 65-72F, KH 3-6, pH 6.0-7.0 Propagation: Bulbs, Seeds Max. Bulbs are a great way to start plants in a tank
I could not tell which end of this bulb was the top or bottom, so I put it in my tank and let it float for few days to see from which ends roots and leaves sprouted. Within a week, there were leaves and roots beginning to form. I normally do not fertilize my plants, and instead let them get their nutrients from the decaying debris in the tank’s substrate. Since I ordered this plant to use in a tank that was newly set up, I put a Seachem Flourish Tablet below the plant’s roots when I sunk them into the tank’s sand substrate. After 12 days, the plant has about 9 leaves, the tallest of which are already 5 inches long.I wanted a large plant for the back center of a 55 gallon tank for breeding freshwater Red Cherry Shrimp. I wanted a plant with leaves that would fan out to cover a large area to provide habitat for the small shrimp. For a large plant in a tall tank, this is the perfect choice. It’s leaves have a very attractive wavy appearance and grow up to 20 inches tall. One of the best things is that you don’t have to worry about snail eggs and other such pests hitching a ride and infesting your tank. Many large plants are raised by commercial growers in ponds that have lots of snails, parasites, and other nasties growing in them, which will hitch a ride on the plants and wreck havoc with your tank. Quarantining plants and pretreating them to kill pests is a hassle, but necessary to avoid headaches otherwise. With these bulbs, it it much easier to clean them. Salt water dips which are recommended for killing pests on plants before putting them in your tank, but the salt water can often damage tender new leaves of plants. Since this plants is shipped as a bulb, it is easy to soak in salt for a few minutes to kill anything microscopic that is hitching a free ride.A down side is that some bulbs may fail to sprout. When I order this one, I also ordered a Aponogeton Capuronii bulb from the same seller. The Capuronii bulb rotted without ever sprouting a leaf or root. From now on when I buy plant bulbs for my aquariums, I’m planning to first put them a bowl with some sand and water to make sure they sprout rather than rotting and releasing bad chemicals into the tank. From everything I read about this species, it is also considered one of the easiest plants to grow for beginners or those of us who want live plants without lots of work maintaining them. It will grow quickly with medium light and does not require CO2 treatments. For beginners with a tall tank, a plant like this is a perfect accompaniment to a good filter, as it helps reduce ammonia, nitrate, and phosphate levels in a tank between water changes.

Impressive plant!
What an amazingly beautiful plant! I ordered two of these. One had a tiny sprout, the other unfortunately didn’t sprout after two weeks in one of my tanks. I contacted the seller who informed me that they have been dormant and occasionally take a while to sprout, and some might not. He asked me to wait a few more days. When I reached out again, Victor was quick to respond and sent me another bulb with a tiny sprout. The first one I planted is now nearly 2ft tall and has six enormous leaves. It grows impressively fast. I would recommend it for taller tanks over 20 gallons. I currently have one in a 15 gallon Aqueon column tank and I may have to relocate it to my 40 gallon. At 2 weeks since planting, I have six huge leaves. If it really can produce 40 leaves it will over power my 15 gallon, but currently it looks stunning. I’m not using CO2 and I only use root tabs for fertilization. Very easy to grow and satisfying to watch. And I really appreciate the buying experience and customer service.

I gave too many chances
Let me start with I used to order these bulbs long ago and they were excellent, easy to grow, full, and beautiful. In the past 2 months Iâve order 3 bulbs consecutively, each one fouling out and ruining my water in my well established tank . The third bulb was recent in this past week . I placed in my tank and checked it everyday because of the post anxiety due to the others fouling . And what do you know . I pulled the new one out today and there was that faint rotten smell I know so well with these fouled bulbs . I will say the first two DID start to bloom . And they were not the same species I was getting before . None the less I kept them to see where it went , the leaves went nasty, and the bulb fouled out . I have SEVERAL other live plants in my tank thriving . Donât waste your time especially if you donât want to clean the mess it makes out of your fish cycle .

Amazing Aquatic Plant
I bought two of these bulbs originally and didn’t have good luck with them. One didn’t sprout; the other took about a month to sprout. However, when it did, it grew into a spectacular plant.I recently bought a new aquarium (120 gallon) and decided I wanted this plant along the back wall. I ordered 8 bulbs, and I am so happy with them. They sprouted within a few days and are growing at an unbelievable rate. It’s only been three weeks and already they are nearly reaching the top of the aquarium (24 inches). I highly recommend these bulbs for medium to large aquariums. The plants are very beautiful with vibrant green leaves that corkscrew. On a side note, the original plant I got has flowered. It sent out a very long stalk that ended with a fluffy flower at the end, floating on the surface of the aquarium. (I measured the stalk – it was nearly 4 feet – yes 4 feet – long coiled around in the aquarium).I highly recommend these bulbs. Just be aware that they probably aren’t appropriate for a small aquarium as the plants grow pretty big. (Too big for a 10 – 20 gallon tank).

50% Success Rate – Still Recommend
I bought the first one and it grew in less than a week and is stunning. Itâs been months and the plant outshines the fish in the tank.I bought a second one and unfortunately it was a dud. Sooooooo bummed! I am on the fence if I will buy a replacement, but I would still recommend giving these a shot if youâre a beginner and have difficulty growing plants. The first plant that did well still looks beautiful and I have gravel substrate, I donât have a CO2 set up in my tank and rarely fertilize.
