Humic substances are natural derivatives of organic materials found in soils and, more importantly (for aquarium hobbyists), in many forested streams and rivers. They are collectively comprised of humic and fulvic acids, which are the product of the natural decomposition of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and lignins of plant and/or animal origin. A characteristic of humic substances is their deep brown color, which is responsible for the color of soil. Soluble humic substances increase the bioavailability of multivalent cations (many of which are important nutrients for plants) to plants considerably by forming temporary bonds with these ions and making their uptake by plants more direct; this increases the effectiveness that water care products containing these ions will have in planted aquaria. Blackwater rivers are so-called because of the coloration of the water, which ranges from light- to dark-brown (as a result of the presence of humic substances), but is transparent. There are many important blackwater rivers in the and Orinoco River drainages, as well as throughout forested regions of Southeast Asia, all origins of many families of important aquarium fishes. Blackwater biotope aquaria are therefore desirable when attempting to maintain these fish. Gradually increasing the concentration of humic substances in aquaria is an effective method of encouraging spawning in fishes, particularly for Discus, Cardinal Tetras, and other inhabitants of such blackwater rivers as Brazil’s Rio Negro. In general, the concentration of humic substances increases substantially during periods of excessive precipitation and/or flooding (e. g. “rainy season”), which is also when fishes in many river systems spawn. The addition of Brightwell Aquatics BlackWater to an aquarium will slightly acidify the water, and will discolor it in direct correlation with the dosage used, the volume of the water in the entire aquarium system, and the method(s) of chemical filtration employed; in general, the greater the dosage employed, the more pronounced the change in water coloration will be. BlackWater will also soften water as a result of the natural chelating action of humic substances. These are all important environmental and/or chemical cues utilized by fish for the onset of spawning.

Positive results 24 hours after addition
I notice a difference in feeding after 24 hours. My Altums ate more ferociously than usual. I will keep testing and look for long term results. Product is easy to use.

Works, but be realistic about dosing
It’s basically just almond leaves boiled to get the tannins out, in a bottle. Nothing wrong with that and it’s exactly why I bought it. The thing is though, the dosing says 1 cap per 20 gallons or so, this is a bit deceiving but it really depends how dark you want it. I ended up using half the bottle for a 40g breeder and got a nice tint in it. Definitely worth the price for the convenience however. Will buy again (but the largest size this time).

Brightwell aquatic product line is great
I’ve been mostly using the shrimp line from Brightwell aquatic. This blackwater stuff is really good for betta fish and shrimp tanks. Five stars

    Perfect for River Fish Tanks
I got this because I have piranhas and naturally they prefer river-like environments, so I figured this may be a good addition to their habitat. I have a 75-gallon aquarium so a few capfuls of this stuff made it pretty murky and provided the ideal river-water look. It seems to work great, I’m hoping it will help during spawning season!

Not for the appearance of tinted water,
Great product, however a misleading branding. Don’t use if you are expecting an instant “black water” style tank. The products they make to simulate black water don’t actually tint the water enough to be used in that particular fashion. It should specify that it only simulates the water chemistry of black water. Basically, if you want “tinted black water” it’s quicker to just boil almond leaves and other botanicals!

    Makes water cloudy
I know it’s possible to have a clear dark water tank, but not with this stuff. It. Great to add tannins to water for health benefits. But do not like the cloudy!

A great additive to routine water changes for tropical aquascape
This stuff seems to really bring out the urge in some of the fish. My Corydora Julii population has doubled since I included a few drops this stuff in my routine water changes. I’m not certain it’s the main reason, but I’ve never seen them laying eggs up until then (I’m not an expert). The school of ember tetras I have with the corys also seem more vibrant and active.I live in an area where the water is a bit on the hard side (more alkaline), so anything that can help soften it to a level tropical fish can thrive in helps.

There are many ways to prepare water for rearing dendrobatid tadpoles; I’ve had success raising many tadpoles with this product as part of my husbandry regime.

This product is good but short shelf life, don’t buy this big container if you can’t finish it in a few months
