Perfect Dog Gate
I really like this style of dog gate. I like the cat door which lets the cat go from room to room, but keeps the dog in. I did end up returning the extra tall gate and got a smaller gate only because once I installed the tall gate, the top rail was lined up directly with the door knob, and it was not easy to open the door anymore.I will say itâs easy to install. The latch is sturdy. Just make sure before you order the gate, double check the height of your door and where the top of the gate lines up. Itâs a great value.

I have three indoor only cat athletes and one brainiac chubster who have managed to defeat even the fabulous Retract-a-Gate. I’ve worried about one of them getting hurt to the point where I’ve discontinued the use of gates in restricting the cats. Now I just shut them in a bedroom when I need to restrict them temporarily. But I’m very shortly adding a puppy to the mix and I need something to prevent the dog from accessing the cat food and litter box areas. This gate will be the perfect solution.It is the tallest gate I’ve seen at 41 inches, and can even be raised higher in the doorway if needs be, though you will need to step over any additional height added, which might become awkward. I cannot fault the materials, the design, the construction–all are first rate. And all the “installation” materials are included, along with very clear, easily understood, step-by-step instructions. It took me less than five minutes to put the gate up in a bathroom doorway. Carlson gives a minimum doorway width of 29 inches, but my opening is slightly less–a smidge over 28 inches–and it sets up perfectly. Just read the instructions, follow them exactly, and all will be well.The gate can be installed for the door to open either into the area you’re protecting, or flipped to open outward, not both. The small door at the bottom swings open in either direction and locks securely with a little spring-action “deadbolt.” The small door is plenty large for any adult cat or small dog. I know my new puppy will be able to go through the cat door at first, but I’m hopeful that once she’s full grown the door will be too small. Until then I will modify the cat door with one of the clever solutions other Amazon reviewers have kindly provided and posted. Thanks everyone for all the customer pictures, too. I love the various zip tie solutions and the person who opted to lock the small door closed and remove just one of the bars…genius! I strongly suggest anyone considering this gate browse through the customer pictures for ideas in modifying and customizing this product for your particular animal household.(There are even more useful customer pictures on the Carlson shorter, wider version of this same gate here: Carlson 0930PW Extra-Wide Walk-Thru Gate with Pet Door, White)If you’re worried about a large dog knocking the door out of position I would certainly use the little “cups” which hold the rubber stops securely in place. The instructions clearly warn against using this gate without these “cups” at the top of a stairway, so I imagine they give a lot of extra stability. What I have done is position the gate so that the rubber stops butt against the doorway trim. It can’t be knocked into the room, though I’m fairly sure that the gate could be knocked out of the doorway from the “room side” with some effort. The solution is to think about how you plan to use the gate and which area you’re wanting to restrict and put it in place right the first time. If I were putting the gate in a hallway or open doorway, I would definitely use the “cups” to secure the door in place. I have not used them, but I may at some point, particularly if the gate becomes a permanent part of my home decor. Only time and dog training will tell.In the meantime I have installed the door to get the cats (and myself) accustomed to using it. They were cool with it immediately. Cats will always take the path of least resistance. After a week or so I will gradually reduce the opening of the small door so that only the cats can pass back and forth. Once the puppy arrives I may have to reduce it further temporarily. We’ll see.Some reviewers have mentioned that the people pass-through opening of this gate is not very wide. It’s 16 inches exactly. I measured it myself just now. If you’re not able to do the sideways shuffle through a 16 inch gap, then this product won’t work for you. I give this advice as a person of size and in the spirit of full disclosure. Even a “normal” sized adult shouldn’t expect to be able to stride through this gate facing full front. It’s just not designed that way. Larger people are accustomed to making these small adjustments in daily life. Just remember if you’re on the borderline size-wise, the gate is steel and will not “give.” Ask yourself if even this fantastic gate, and it is fantastic, is worth struggling through every time you need to pass. With this gate some “slim-jims” may have to learn the art of accommodation. ‘Nuff said.The Amazon price on this gate is so low it could lead one to believe that it’s somehow not as strong, or well-made, or “nice” as other higher priced gates. Not so. This is one of my top ten Amazon bargain finds of all time. (Believe me, I’ve had my fair share.) I am a 100% satisfied owner. It is everything I hoped it would be in functionality and quality, and price-wise it’s an outright steal.

Love the gate it was either this one or the one with no cate gate, glad we pick this one because of the cat gate will be more useful in the future. The gate was easy to put together after my hubby figured out why one part couldn’t go in, turns out something was stuck in there like an extra part. Other than that hiccup, it should be easy to put it together, plus there were instructions, AND make sure you don’t loose this little white piece that is the knob for the cat door.Cons: The gate vertical bars is a bit wide. My less than 6month old kitties can fit threw them and don’t need to use the “cat door.” My dorkie can also fit in the cat door but he knows better not to go through the hallway going to the laundry area where the cat food and kitty box are. We have baseboard molding on the bottom of our house where we put our gate in, so we had to but the tension rod a bit higher so we have like 3 inches from the ground. I also don’t like how when you open the door the cat door swings with it it doesn’t like stay like open, so the cat door kinda closes when you swing it back, so my older fat cat sometimes can’t figure out just push it or claw on it like he does to open regular doors.Pros: It will keep the dogs out of a place better than those wooden or plastic gates. Since this is made of mostly medal they can’t chew on it and the tension rode hold up a lot better than the wooden ones specially a dog just pushes it. Pretty much really good gate instead of those wooden gates that my kids broke trying to go over, now we don’t need to worry about going over because of the gate swings open. The opener for the gate is a bit weird but it serves a purpose when you are keeping a toddler out of an area child proof stuff. But so far is very sturdy!Will probably get the same brand gate like this but just the gate without the cat door to put in another hallway. Overrall, it serves the purpose that we got the gate for, which is to keep the dogs out of the cat area. Will be tall and strong even hopefully when our Great Pyrenees becomes full grown.

Training my new puppy to not harass the cats has been EXHAUSTING! This gate has made life so much easier; the door allows the cats to escape and my puppy hasn’t figured out how to squeeze inside.Quality is really good. The handle/lock was a bit tricky when we first started using the gate, but it’s broken in a bit and locks/unlocks smoothly now. Installation was simple enough, properly attaching it to the door frame required an electric drill.

Fue muy fácil de armar y aunque las reseñas que decÃan que no cerraba bien me preocuparon, quedó perfecta y la verdad dudo de los que las escribieron creo que no la supieron poner pues en mi primer intento desesperado y sin querer leer las instrucciones, me quedo con mucho espacio y no se alcanzaba a cerrar la puerta de tanto espacio que habÃa, pero leyendo con detenimiento el fabricante explicaba todo hasta tiene una etiqueta colgando en la misma reja explicando este problema, se ve muy bonita, es funcional y llegó mucho más rápido de lo que decÃa que llegaria. Sin duda vale la pena.
