NICE substrate!
I bought four 20 pound bags of this black aquarium sand for my new 75 gallon tank. I really like this substrate!I rinsed the first bag as instructed and I felt that I really did not need to. So I dumped the other three bags directly in to the tank without rinsing it.I did not experience any problems whatsoever. Sure, there were a few floating bits here and there, but I have seen that even after a good rinsing. I guess that what I am saying is that I have never purchased cleaner aquarium substrate. This sand is CLEAN!I love the black color. The new driftwood looks beautiful with it. The pic above is how the tank is today. I am waiting for plants. The plants are going to pop against this black sand. I cannot wait! The bottom line is this: I am 110% satisfied with this sand. I will definitely buy it again. I highly recommend it.

UPDATED: 2nd bag was fine;1st bag must’ve been bad. (ORIGINAL: Nice looking but impossible to clean)
UPDATE: Feb 13, 2020 – Although I said I wouldn’t buy this brand of sand again after the fiasco I had the first time (original review below), I needed another bag, and the shipped price of this stuff is so much better than any others I’ve found, so I took a chance and tried another bag, this time with completely different results. The first bag just wouldn’t clean up, and I never did get the water to run clear even though I soaked and rinsed repeatedly every day for over a week. When I finally gave up and added it to my 2 ft X 4 ft aquarium, I got the first and only bacteria bloom I’ve ever experienced….a HUGE bacteria bloom that took alot of time and work to completely clear and clean. WHAT A MESS! This second time, the sand was basically clean right from the bag, just as other reviewers have said. The water I rinsed it in never turned black like it did with the first bag. All I can think of is I must have gotten a bad bag that first time, maybe from a bad batch. I don’t know what would have caused the issue I experienced, but I learned a lesson I won’t soon forget — If you can’t get sand to clean up and run clear water after rinsing it over and over and over, it’s probably wise not to put it in your aquarium. BUT, that’s not to say the next bag won’t be just fine…..IF you can muster the courage to try it again. I have changed my original 2 star rating to 5 stars.ORIGINAL REVIEW: Sept 2, 2019 – I bought this brand because it was less $ than my previous brand, but, for me, it wasn’t worth it. While other reviews have said it was clean out of the bag or very easy to clean, that wasn’t my experience. I soaked it and rinsed and rinsed and rinsed every day, the water always turning a translucent black. This went on for over a week. I finally gave up and put it in the tank only to get a HUGE bacteria bloom! It’s the first time I’ve ever had one, and I don’t believe it was coincidence that it happened after an issue with sand that wouldn’t clean up. I’ve taken the sand out, 1/3 at a time (trying not to crash the cycle) and have started over, but I’m finding it impossible to remove every bit of the dead slime. This was really a nightmare, and I don’t think I’ll take a chance on buying this brand again.

Inexpensive compared to alternatives
I was looking for some black sand substrate for a planted tank and this was by far the cheapest choice I found. Took a lot of rinsing to get dust off but now that that is done and itâs in the tank it looks great. Itâs about as fine as sand, but less sharp on the edges. When I ordered Amazon app said delivery would take a week, which was disappointing, but it showed up next day.

Rinse, Rinse, and Rinse some more
Price was very good, it is dirty/dusty. I rinsed this product three times and it still had a lot of floaters. I placed the sand in my tank and you can see from the pictures the amount of floaters still in the sand. I skimmed a lot of the floaters off. Iâll let it sit over night and see how it looks in the morning. This is a very fine sand. The color is good, the price was good. If you can deal with all the rinsing and skimming off the floaters, then give it a try.4 stars because this is labor intensive to get clean and then getting the tank clear.

Didnât take long to rinse at all
Amazing and super easy to work with I was scared to death about this sand after all the reviews I read but it was a walk in the park compared to what I expected. Amazing value for an amazing product.

Rinse rinse n rinse again
You will be rinsing this sand forever. Everytime you stir n rinse ur sand the water will turn black from the die. It will never truly come clear. It doesn’t seem to hurt the fish but if u could find something that doesn’t bleed into the water I suggest finding a new brand. BTW this review is over a year after using the sand and it will still turn the water black if u stir the sand around in ur tank. Which u hav2 do to make sure dangerous gasses dnt build up under ur substrate. Other than that as long as ur only gently moving the sand around here n there the water will stay clear. All in all it does look pretty in the tank and I still enjoy the look so I’d still buy it again knowing what ik now.

Perfect black substrate
I just started my first aquarium and took a chance on this sand by purchasing two bags of it. It is absolutely perfect. All it took was rinsing for about 10 minutes and the water ran completely clear. Once I added it to my fish tank, it looked beautiful. Very clean sand and well worth the money.
