Spending 2/3s less, piggies now popcorn for pellets
We fed our guinea pigs the same food the pet shop gave them, the most expensive brand they had, for about a year. They seemed to take it like medicine and we were throwing away uneaten pellets even after adding less to the bowl for 4 guinea pigs. When I poured this new stuff into their bowl for the first time, they immediately began to popcorn and squeal their heads off. Not only do they finish every last bit (we always make sure they donât fully run out and keep it filled), but theyâve also begun moving their bowl across the pen, under their blanket, so they can keep eating it. They literally lay over the bowl with their faces in it. To stop me from moving the bowl back, they flip it and dump the pellets out. I know this because I see them finishing off what little is left of the pile, their bowl upside down and do the side. I have yet to catch them in the act.We had a few occasions where they surprised us by eating their pellets faster than we anticipated (and hiding their bowl), and it took a while before we found the right amount to provide. They went through this stuff twice as fast with virtually none wasted, and itâs still far cheaper than what we fed them before, about 1/3 the price.I keep checking the labels because I donât understand how they get more excited about pellets than carrots, and I assume there has to be some kind of catch. I havenât found one yet. The nutrition is largely the same. The more expensive version might have slightly more vitamins for a few of the ones listed, but sometimes it has less.Iâm assuming that if itâs consumed eagerly like a treat, it must be a treat. Some catch, like an unhealthy ingredient that they should not get too much of, that can explain why they want the cheap stuff so bad that they keep pushing their bowl into their bed so they donât have to stop eating it.Havenât found it yet.

Staple of a Guinea Pig Diet
QUICK REVIEW:—No fattening treats.—Piggies love it.—Amazon matches Chewy for price.—Vitamin C included.—Good part of a guinea pig’s diet.—Can be fed daily.—Feeds 3 adult females for about 3-4 weeks per bag.—Broken bags are rare.—Easy open and resealable bag.DETAILED REVIEW:I’ve been a proud guinea pig owner for two years to my three girls and from day one, I have used this brand and this flavor or pellets. All guinea pigs require pellets in their diet to secure key vitamins and nutrients they cannot get from hay alone. I pick Timothy Complete because it packs the most nutrients without those fattening ‘treats’ mixed in. A lot of other pellets have dried carrots and treats mixed in that should not be given daily to guinea pigs. It also can lead to potentially picky piggies as they choose the treats over regular pellets. This way, I can feed my piggies their pellets daily and not have to worry about them gaining weight. My piggies have always liked this brand and will always eat their bowls down to dust every day. I have had no issues with pellets going untouched.I have noticed many reviews complaining that their boxes arrive with the bags open and pellets spilled everywhere. Thankfully, I have only ever had that issue once out of several orders/bags. Amazon also competes well with Chewy’s prices. If you have Prime, pick Amazon and you’ll save at least $5 over Chewy on shipping every time you order more. Compared to brands like Oxbow, Kaytee is also very affordable. So far, I have no reason to feed my piggies anything else.

Better than most, but not as good as Oxbow
As far as popular and commercially-available guinea pig pellets go, Kaytee Timothy Complete is one of the better choices, seeing as it doesn’t have all those “extras” — corn, seeds, colored crunchies that resemble dry cat food — mixed in. (Stay away from the brands that have all the “extras” in the pellet mix, as they present a choking hazard and are nutritionally inadequate.)My adult GPs liked the Kaytee Timothy Complete pellet perfectly fine; but then I started boycotting PetSmart and was forced to find pellets elsewhere. It’s a good thing, too, because then I found the Oxbow Cavy Cuisine pellet. Oxbow is the best brand available due to nutrient content, freshness, digestibility, and far fewer preservatives. My piggies LOVE the Oxbow pellets and flat-out refuse to eat the Kaytee pellets now.Go for the Oxbow Cavy Cuisine Timothy-based pellet (for adult GPs) or the Oxbow Cavy Performance Alfalfa-based pellet (for pups & pregnant females). They come in a red pouch, and you can get them for a very reasonable price if you shop around a little. However, if you can’t find Oxbow, this Kaytee Timothy Complete pellet is probably your next best bet, given your options.Update: Thanks to another reviewer on this page for pointing out one of the many toxic preservatives in this pellet. Most people would be surprised to see how many toxins are used as preservatives in the vast majority of pet foods. Please have enough love for your guinea pigs to do some research and find them the best pellet available! Your vet will be able to provide some guidance.

Great food
My guinea pigs would only eat Walmart brand food and then they changed the product. I tried a number of other products and they would not eat it. Came upon this one and decided what the heck. They absolutely love this food. I actually have to have it on a subscription because it is all they will eat

My 5 pigs go nuts over this food. They wait for me to feed them and immediately eat it unlike other foods Iâve purchased in the past this food does not get wasted.

my guinea pig love this hay. The quality is good. The colour is a nice green

Came from a “foraging” diet food and that only encouraged selective feeding, so I switched to this.Had to adjust my guinea pigs diet at first by doing a 80/20 mix then a 60/40 and slowly more until it was entirely the new Kaytee brand and they’ve adjusted great! Love that there’s so many vitamins in this that will assist in keeping our little piggies happy and healthy!

I wish this would come back to Amazon. My guinea pigs loved it.Edit: It did come back, but at literally 5 times the price I paid. Won’t be buying it again at this price!

My guinea pigs enjoy this food and do well on it. I just wish it didn’t have alfalfa.
