Will work fine if you add proper filtration.
I have kept various kinds of fish for about 50 years now and have several tanks, ranging from 55 gallons all the way down to this great little globe, which I love. Only recently, while searching the Internet for some smaller nanotanks, I’ve seen some of the online commentary regarding bowls such as this. I was startled to see that many folks believe they’re death traps, but the truth is that any tank, big or small, can be a death trap if you are not attentive to it.I set this one up with a small-sized Lee’s round undergravel filter. I could have used an extra-small sponge filter such as a Small World filter instead (and probably should have, as those are easier to maintain.) The gravel I used was from one of my well-aged, cycled tanks, so the beneficial bacteria on which aquarium filtration depends was automatically introduced into the globe. The undergravel filter is powered by a $5.00 non-UL Whisper 10-gallon air pump, dialed back a bit with the included valve. The light hood cover of this bowl features a slot for airlines or heater cords, so it is designed for these accessories– a big plus! The cover measures about 5-3/4″ inches across, so will fit other, larger globes as well. I powered the lights with a mini-USB cable left over from an old cell phone.I always use a combination of living and plastic plants in my tanks. Live plants are a very important aspect of tank filtration, especially in tanks this small. They help consume the nitrates which the bacteria leave behind. This tank has Marimo moss, hornwort and baby tears. All three are doing well with the included light. I also found a nice fallen log decoration here on Amazon which is slightly curved and fits perfectly against the curved side of the bowl to make a lovely cave.To help cycle the bowl further, I then introduced a very, very, VERY small GOLDFISH. Yep, a goldfish! This is one from a brood of feeders I hatched recently. He was not even an inch long at the time and was a perfect fit for the globe. He lived in this tank happily, with no apparent stress, for several weeks, and then I put him in my goldfish pond where he is still living– and growing bigger. I understand this method of tank cycling is now considered old school, but it has always worked for me.Finally, after all that, I introduced my fancy floofy halfmoon betta into the bowl. He is active and thriving there. He has plenty of room to swim, spaces to hide, and structures to explore. The bowl is on my computer desk right at my elbow, so I interact with him a lot. This lets me keep a close eye on him and the water quality. So far I have had zero problems with this fish bowl or its lights. The plastic (I hesitate to call it ‘acrylic’) is thin but very clear, with some small imperfections which don’t bother me but could irritate folks used to the polished perfection of large acrylic tanks. The multi-colored lights are beautiful and even adequate to grow low-light plants. The lid has a cutout for heater cords and airline tubing. Overall this is a wonderful nano-tank.This one gallon bowl works perfectly for a betta and some small snails, such as the two ram’s horns I have in with mine. Many different kinds of nanofish fry, such as guppy fry, would also find this bowl an excellent home, as would a few cherry shrimp. A tiny baby goldfish can be kept in here for a little while as I did, but not permanently. With all aquariums, it’s important to do a partial water change once a week.Bottom line– add a filter and don’t overstock, and this little nano-bowl will work fine and really look beautiful.

Love
I was testing it after reading the reviews.. so I took a chance anyway because being in the hobby of Aquatics I can always alter things to make them the way I need them to be.. I wanted a simple large fish bowl not that most were one gallons some two gallons but I found this one for 3 gallons at a very good deal.. some people complain that there’s no switch but there is if you gently pop off the black top and turn it over there is a switch right in the center where the batteries go.. I believe this is the timer switch because the light went off eventually.. I like the fact also that it has openings to be able to put an air bubbler in there with a small sponge avoid having to clean the tank as it is very heavy with 3 gallons of water in it.. I love all the lights but the last two towards the end switch Softly by themselves to all colors rotating.. one’s a little faster and then the one last to the off button is the gentle one that goes a little slower.. I doubted glass art inside a glass seashell and a betta fish.. very happy with this purchase and if the lights burn out that’s fine.. I’ll just buy a plate that has the lights to set the fish bowl on.. to change the water all I did was use an air hose that you can buy at any pet store and drain it the water down and then add distilled water or treated water back in.. as I said the Bowl is too heavy to pick up.. the only thing that’s down sided about it is that the plastic with this kind of weight should be thicker than what it is.. just from the way I’m afraid that if I tried to carry it it might crack otherwise I’m happy with the product

Poor investment- not a good product
I purchased four of these so I can say with confidence that the lighting fixture burns through batteries within a single to two uses at most. And in a very short amount of time, the plastic becomes cloudy so I canât see my fish anymore.

Think twice before you buy
Now you need to know that I did read the reviews and bought it anyway. Guess what? The reviews were right. Within two days the light went bonkers on me. You can turn it back on and get MAYBE 15 minutes before it goes out again. The little bowl works great for me but donât expect the light to work

Nice small aquarium, but a little disappointed with the “quality control” UPDATE
The aquariums (I bought 2 of them) are just the right size and shape for my application (“robot” fish that would get caught in corners of a square or rectangle tank (or any other shape that has corners). However, one of the two led light components had bad wiring from the battery holder. As it turned out, the power adapter from my previous aquariums fit the jack on the new aquarium lighting components so I am able to use both of the units (I am, in fact, happier using the power adapter rather than having to change batteries periodically).UPDATE:After one week of use, the aquarium that originally worked on both batteries and adapter power, stopped working on adapter power (it wasn’t a problem with the adapter as that adapter works with other devices). So now I have to power one by adapter because it won’t work on batteries and the other on batteries because it won’t work on adapter power.

Battery powered light
The light runs on batteries. I wish it would plug in because the batteries obviously run down if you leave the light on. Otherwise very Nice product. Big red loved his new home.

Fit for a betta or as a decoration
I got this to be shelf candy. I wanted to fill with orbeeies and have a cool light toy while I podcast.I need more orbeez for sure.As an aquarium, this is nice. The light takes 2x AA and those are protected from the water via the nicely designed lid. The lid has a break-out for running an airline down so the bubbling can happen. My cat knocked it 3 feet off shelf and nothing broke. It’s solidly made. I am now thinking of keeping a fish again, but that cat is too mischievous.

Meh
The bowl is fine, but the light in it doesnât work. Iâve sent one back and got another one and it worked for one day and stopped. I used brand new batteries. So itâs a glitch on the product. The first one started smoking.

Cute fishbowl. Was dented. A cluster of 3 dents in one spot and one big one on another spot. Was an Xmas gift for my toddler or I would’ve tried exchanging it, but there was not enough time. Batteries do NOT last long on the light. Lights weren’t in use until Christmas day and I have changed them twice already. (Brand new Duracell batteries each time) I was hoping in time the dents would pop back out after sitting full of water, but no such luck.

Came with nothing. Not as advertised. Total waste of money.

Muy bonita. Lo único negativo que le encuentro es que el eliminador para corriente electrica lo tienes que comprar por separado. Usarla con pilas no es una buena opción.
