Attractive, Works well, Fair Price
I love this great little Marineland aquarium! My favorite part is the beautiful glass that it’s made of. It’s not a cheap plastic tank. It came with everything that I needed except for fish and gravel. I especially like that it has two lighting options, white for the daytime and blue for the night. The pump and filter work well and my grandsons really enjoy it. They have had it almost a month and it’s still holding up well and is beautiful

Attractive tank at a great price
This is a great rimless glass aquarium priced at half of what I have seen similar tanks go for. Not including the pedestal, the tank is 14″ high and roughly 9-10/16″ wide and long. The pedestal adds another 1-1/4″ of height without increasing the footprint. There is plastic divider siliconed across the back of the tank creating a separate rear 2â compartment. A sheet of glass lays over the front compartment of the tank with a small gap at the front which permits air flow with the outside room. The rear compartment has a somewhat flimsy plastic piece covering it (more on this later). Overall, the aquarium is well protected from the outside and there is no risk of fish jumping out or cats jumping in.
The filter caddy and pump are nicely hidden in the rear compartment and there is just enough room to squeeze a small submersible heater as well (not included). The rear compartment is a really nice feature in that it hides all of the wires and accessories from the viewing area of the tank â a very clean and minimalist look. The current from the filter is strong as other reviewers have noted, but it can be dialed down or redirected away from the surface as needed. I personally like the strong current because it evenly distributes the nutrients I add for my plants throughout the tall aquarium without creating dead spots.
The filter is actually a pretty nice design. It has an inlet on the lower right of the divider as well as a surface skimmer at the top right. A 3″ wide filter caddy sits in the rear compartment and reroutes flow from the inlet to the pump on the left side. The pump recirculates the water into the main tank compartment through a spout in the top left of the divider. As I mentioned above, there is room in the rear compartment between the pump and filter caddy that can accommodate a smaller heater, just make sure to put it low because the rear compartment tends to have a lower water level than the front compartment.
The aquarium came with an LED light source that includes a day and night toggle switch. The light is fairly bright but insufficient for growing any decent live plants. I replaced it with a Finnex Planted+ Cliplight and have been very happy with the illumination and growth rates of this tallish tank.
I have only two complaints about the build of this tank, but neither are deal breakers.
1) The rear compartment provides plenty of room for a multi-stage filtration system but is instead restricted to standard carbon cartridges. I would have liked to see a basket system where sponges, floss, bio media, Purigen, etc. could be used. I ended up remodeling the filter caddy with a 1/8â acrylic sheet and some acrylic cement and now I can use whichever medias I choose.
2) The plastic cover for the rear compartment is flimsy and ill-fitting. Itâs raised at the edges and just looks bad. I had some extra acrylic from my filter modification so I ended up replacing this too. Considering the quality of the rest of the tank, Iâm not sure why they would cut corners here.
Despite these two minor complaints, the aquarium is very high quality overall and definitely worth the price. With my filter modification and some heavy planting, Iâve been able to keep a male Betta, three Otos, several ghost shrimp, and a couple Nerite snails without issue. I think itâs a great looking tank and I would definitely recommend it to others.

Beautiful Beginner Tank – Well Made – Perfect for Betta’s & Shrimp
ââ INITIAL IMPRESSIONS
Mine arrived perfectly. Which is more than I can say about the two attempts at purchasing a Fluval Spec from Amazon. The Marineland Portrait is well packaged.
The curved glass looks fantastic. Think of it as one big shot glass. It makes the tank feel very high end. Although the glass is of lower quality than say a Fluval Spec V – it is still very clear and very thick comparatively.
I have only two real criticism of this unit. My first is about the black plastic cover in the back, as others have said, feels flimsy. Marineland; if you are reading reviews, you should switch this out to a ticket matte ABS plastic.
My second is the âclear siliconeâ on the back divider panel. This is nit-picky, but I think black would have been a better choice. Whenever I look into the tank, it stands out in the back corners.
Overall though, this feels like a quality tank. Iâve had no issues with mine to date. Iâm very happy with the product. Itâs a great looking tank for a desktop. And it looks high end.
I do have two recommendations for anyone who wants to hot rod this tank down below.
ââ MY SETUP
I purchased this tank to do my first planted. Iâm using âFluval Plant and Shrimp Stratumâ as my substrate, and then I have some Dragon stone and a dozen plants. The Marmimo moss ball and Frogbit are my favorites.
In my tank I have 1 Red Veiltail Betta, 13 Red Cherry Shrimp, 2 Apple Snails & 1 Nerite Snail.
ââ RECOMMENDATIONS
So – if you wanted a planted tank, you can do better for the lighting. Both the âONF Nanâo & the âFluval Plant Bluetooth Nanoâ will fit the back of this tank and allow you to use the back cover.
I purchase the Fluval Nano (shown in my photos) as you get better bang for your buck with it. The ONF Nano might be better looking though. Thatâs up to you if, should you decide to upgrade.
If you are going to have plants, youâre going to want to upgrade the light. The OE light is âOkâ but itâs not going to provide you with the kind of lighting you want to grow things.
The second thing I did was improve the filtration. I chucked what it came with, and purchased some foam filter material to fill int he whole back panel where they just provide you a small block of it. On the front, I chucked that charcoal filter and did a DIY water polisher. The water first passes through âinTank Aquarium and Pond Value Pack – Bonded Blue & White Poly Filter Floss Pads 600-square-inchesâ and then through â
Polishing Filter Pad 100 Micron – 1 Pack -Superior Aquarium Prefilter Media – Cut to Fit 24″ by 36″ for Fresh Water & Saltwater Fish Tanks, Aquaculture, Hydroponics – Made in the USAâ
In the compartment, Iâm using a filter bag filled with Fluval Biomax Ceramic Ring.
This is working very well. My water stays crystal clear with the polishing material and the parameters are doing very well with the biomaterial.
Like a few other reviewers, I did drill some small holes into the return tubing to reduce the flow for my Betta and to agitate the water in the back panel.
This is a MUST DO IMO for this tank. Drill some holes people!
ââ FINAL THOUGHTS
I canât recommend this tank enough. Iâm just some random dude on the internet. But this has been a very enjoyable purchase. This tank provides some solid value for the price.

I bought this for my male long finned betta. He uses all the vertical space in the tank, which is unusual, or I would not have bought a tank with this small a surface area. The tank has have 1 male betta and 6(+??) cherry shrimp for around 8 months now with no losses, and consistent water quality. I would not recommend it it for anything other than shrimp and betta fish. And if you have a betta, it should not a high energy fish (female, short finned etc).
I modified it to suit my fish. Cut out the inbuilt filter and instead use a sponge filter. This gave him gentler flow and more swimming space. I changed the light to something better able to penetrate the tank depths. I made sure when I put decorations in the tank that he has mid and top level resting places.
My boy is pretty lazy. He has been in larger tanks in the past (more than double) and does not seem any less active or happy than he is in this tank.

both the pump and light broke within minutes of plugging in. when trying to add my own same sized pump the back panel popped out of its glue. all in all not made well at all biggest waste of money ever. if your buying donât expect it to work about all it does is hold water.

Ive had this for 1 year. I waited to review. We’ve always had HUGE tanks so i know tanks. This is a perfect tank for a betta fish. No leaks after a year. Filter and lights still work like new. My betta has no problem with filter flow. I just turned it down as its adjustable. Got on sale. Very happy with this tank. My betta loves it. Perfect for my 6 year old daughter to watch her fish swim. Great value!!!

Nice tank wrong equipment for the UK, from what I can work out this product is manufactured in China and stored in America with Amazon, all the equipment such as pump ,lighting show they have American tye plug fittings so I bought 2 adapter plugs thinking this would solve the problem, unfortunately the UK is a different power input subsequently blowing the the pump and the lightning I had to buy new of each .I do take some of the blame for assuming the transformers would have been changed for UK and did not check it was a profitable week for Amazon
