Product Description
Mr. Peanut’s Gold Series Expandable model offers a premium design & style combined with upgraded materials all around, with premium brand self locking zippers and a plush removable faux fleece pad with a plywood base insert for additional stability and weight handling. What’s the Difference? I enjoy when buyers ask me this question. Having designed and sold multi thousands of pet carriers and hearing every issue and concern I can answer this here as best I can. I know it is hard when shopping online. All of the pet carriers you see look similar and its hard to compare materials, features and the “look and feel” as one can easily do in person, but here is my summary of what to look for in a pet carrier and what is most important to know or ask, so look for these key features in all brands and compare –
Zippers – These are one of my pet peeves as the zipper quality can turn a fantastic carrier into a loser very fast. When the zipper breaks at the airport or even in your car your carrier of choice becomes basically worthless. Make sure the brand you are looking at includes hi quality zippers from a reputable zipper brand. My totes are all designed with only premium brand zippers, and I improve and upgrade them often as new and better versions come along including the automatic self locking zippers which cannot be opened from inside that are used on this Gold Series tote. It’s much better than the older style clasps which are fragile and unreliable. What Are Self Locking Zippers and Why Do I Want Them? – About 18 months ago I switched my entire line up of carriers to self locking zippers. Self locking zippers are zippers which are designed in a way that they cannot be pushed open from the inside of the bag. I switched the entire line from the older style locking clasps as I found over a long period of time that the clasps in both metal and plastic were fragile and not durable. The self locking zippers remove the need for clasps, and actually results in a much safer tote for pets, and users overwhelmingly prefer them as they do not have to rely on using the small unreliable clasps. The old style clasps simply do not meet my standards. I always focus firstly on pet safety and comfort, and the reason I switched all of the models to self locking zippers is exactly for that reason.Carrier Structure – Soft Sided Pet Carriers by definition are frameless and are mostly only supported by thin steel wire running along the edges and sides of the tote. Keep in mind when you look over images in a listing on any product those will be taken to show off the product in the best possible way, and are often edited to improve the look of the product image. It is very hard to see differences in materials and structure in a product image, but all of my totes are designed with a very strong waterproof nylon material that is also used in the manufacture of military grade parachutes. The materials used help to avoid the sagging, wrinkled look and give the totes additional structure. Pet Safety & Comfort – Lastly, but the most important feature. The pet tote you choose should have locking zippers and a very strong resin mesh. I use a Teslin resin mesh which is the strongest pliable mesh on the market today. They should have a leash tether to insure your pet can be secured while stressed during travels. They should have well designed and secure carrying straps, with a thick metal connector to insure weight handling. They should have a comfortable bedding pad and pockets to store treats, meds and papers. All of Mr. Peanut’s tote designs include all of these and more.Materials & Packing – The tote you choose should be of natural materials and chemical free. We use absolutely no chemicals of any kind in the production of the totes. We use a Nylon 600D composite with a PVC coating for a more durable and wrinkle free structure. We use a Vegan Leatherette for the handles and hi-lites of the tote. We use a Teslin Mesh, which is the strongest pliable mesh available, and is also often used for outdoor furniture, umbrellas, Sunscreens, Cushions, etc due to its high tensile strength, breathability and durability. Your tote will have been sealed in a polybag, and then cartoned, and then shipped for storage until final shipping. With very little exposure to the outside air it is not uncommon to have an odor from the Leatherette and the Mesh akin to a new car smell, which typically will last a few days while dissipating with exposure to the air. Please keep in mind a soft sided tote is not suitable for all pets or for all pet ages. It is imperative to acclimate your pet to a soft sided carrier. We want the pet to consider it a home, not a prison. There is not a soft sided fabric or pliable mesh in existence that can withstand the jaws and claws of a stressed pet, and even our adorable kittens and puppies will have quite sharp teeth and claws. Some pets will indeed be more suited to a hard shell carrier, so please consider your pets adaptability to a soft sided pet carrier. The difference for all products is the seller and how they ensure and handle your satisfaction with the product. Mr. Peanut’s stands behind every product we sell, and if you’re not happy with it we uphold a no matter what, no questions asked, no holds barred, no ifs, no ands, no buts happiness pledge. If you have a problem, we will solve it. Whatever it takes. Simple as that.
I am constantly updating and improving all of the various tote series with each successive generation. I am never satisfied, so I am always improving features of each model with each production run. All of my totes are hand sewn to my specifications by contracted factories in various countries. I always recommend measuring your pet while comfortably laying down, as many pets will tend to curl up a bit. Weight alone is not a good indicator for sizing. Keep in mind airline capable carriers are limited in sizing by under seat constraints, so we want a carrier that’s comfortable but that is also under seat compliant. Interior measurements of any model will be a bit less than maximum exterior simply due to fabric and padding thicknesses. Only the smallest of small pets can fully stand with an airline capable model which is designed to accommodate an 8.5” seat height, a crouch is more typical.
The smaller Mr. Peanut’s models such as the Gold Series Mini and Rhodium Series Mini are about 14” (35.5cm) on the interior length and about 8.5-9” (23cm) of interior height. Best fitting for pets like small cats, Chihuahuas, Yorkies, Maltese, etc
The standard sized models such as the Diamond, Gold, Silver, Rhodium and Platinum Series models are about 16″ (41cm) interior length and about 10” (25cm) interior height. These well fit the smaller pets of similar sizes such as medium cats, Daschunds, Terriers, small Pugs, King Charles Cavs, Poms, etc.
The larger Gold Series Big Apple sized model is about as large as one can go for airline capability. It is about an 18″ (46cm) interior length but the same height and width as the standard sized models. The exterior is about 2” (5cm) longer at 20” (51cm) exterior than most airlines will spec, but it’s built for those pets where there is simply not an option for a smaller size. The Big Apple model has been on the market for a long period of time now, literally sold worldwide, and a very popular model. I have yet to receive a review or complaint of it not being accepted by an airline. It is a good fit for pets of similar size as larger cats, medium Frenchies, Maltipoos, Corgis, Bostons, Pugs, etc.
Backpacks are a great choice for taller pets or those users who seek to take the weight off of their shoulders and free up their hands in busy airports. All of the backpack models are made to lay on their short sides for under seat use, and are padded on both bottom and sides for this. The smaller backpack models consist of the Vancouver, the Monterey, and the Malibu Series. Those smaller backpacks are best fit for smaller cats, small dog breeds such as Chihuahua, Yorkies, Bunnies, etc.
The larger backpack models consist of the Aspen and the Tahoe Series. These models well fit medium to large cats, small Bostons, Daschunds, small Pugs and similar sized breeds.
And for even larger pets where airline capability is not needed but maximum space is desired, do check out the Coronado XL Series as well as the Mr. Peanut’s Portable Pet Crate. Both are structured larger models with considerably more height and space than airline capable carriers can offer.
Frameless Soft Sided Pet Carriers FAQ
Why Soft Sided?
The benefits and popularity of frameless soft sided pet carriers is their pliability and ability to conform to varying under seat configurations of modern aircraft. All airlines actually have similar sizing requirements, and those are more stringent on narrow bodied aircraft than wide bodied aircraft, but yet the primary design of an airline capable tote is to comfortably fit your pet but yet conform to fit under the 8.5″ seat. Keep in mind, airline capable carriers are designed for your pet to be laying down, as most pets will need to do so to allow for fitting under the seat.
Differences of Pet Carrier Types
It is important to point out that there is a substantial design difference between a frameless soft sided airline capable pet carrier and a standard carrier. Keep in mind the priority for an airline capable carrier is the ability and pliability necessary to accomplish under seat requirements, which by definition means that an airline capable carrier is purposely not designed with the same firm structure as a non airline capable pet carrier. What gives a soft sided carrier much of its structure is the zippers themselves along with a thin wire frame.
Airline Compatibility
I work with representatives of the major airline carriers in the design of my totes, including most domestic airlines, and at this point over the years my various totes have been used on virtually every airline around the world. While all airlines can vary a bit due to differing aircraft models and seat layouts, all have the same requirements of under forward seat compatibility. Configurations can vary between regional, national and international routes as differing aircraft are used, but the ability to conform to various seat configurations is what sets the frameless soft sided carrier apart from other types of framed carriers.
Under Seat Compatibility
In short, all of my airline capable carriers are regularly used on domestic and international airlines, and all are compliant with under seat requirements, but the reality is that there can always be an aircraft or route of a particular nature that uses a smaller aircraft without under seat clearance, but I have rarely come across that with reviews and feedback from literally thousands of users over many years. It is always advised to proactively check with your airline of choice well prior to departure.
Airline Requirements
Buyers often ask about “TSA”, “IATA” and “FAA” rated and the fact is that there are only guidelines for animals carried in the cargo holds of airliners, but these do NOT apply to in passenger cabin pet carriers. Always keep in mind each airline sets their own specific requirements, and they can even vary from their domestic, international and shuttle routes so it is always advised to check with your airline of choice. All airlines have very similar sizing guidelines, and all will require your pet to be comfortable in the carrier, well ventilated and to remain under the seat in front of you during flight. The popularity of soft sided carriers stems from their adjustability to fit under the various seat configurations of modern aircraft, and we have designed our carrier to have a pliable top so that it can easily stow under the 8.5″ seat in front of you on most modern day aircraft configurations.
Mr. Peanut’s Mission Statement
Mr. Peanut’s focus is always firstly pet safety and comfort, and secondly under seat capability on the widest variety of aircraft. We strive to provide these at the best value possible and we thank you for your support. I am constantly updating and improving all of the various tote series with each successive generation. I am never satisfied so I am always improving features of each model with each production run. All of my totes are hand sewn to my specifications by contracted factories.

PLEASE NOTE INTERIOR SIZING & PET MEASURING GUIDELINES BEFORE PURCHASE – Best Fits Pets up to 16″Lx10″H and up to 15lbs. Airline capable carriers are designed for pets lying down, so your pet may not be able to stand. It is best to measure your pet while comfortably laying down, as that is the typical position during flight
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND that we show the exterior dimensions as well as approximate interior dimensions to best portray the usable interior space for your pet. The interior space will be less than exterior due to the fabric thickness and plush faux fleece padding. The rounded contours of the tote design means interior dimensions are approximate and shown at their maximum measured points
AIRLINE REQUIREMENTS – Always keep in mind each airline sets their own specific requirements, and they can even vary from their domestic, international, and shuttle services so it is always advised to check with your airline of choice. All will require your pet to be comfortable in the carrier, and to remain under the seat in front of you. All prefer a soft sided carrier for its adjustability and we have designed our carrier to comply with major airline configurations

Good Product
I’ve only traveled with it once, but it held up well and provided comfort and security for my pet. The faux fur cover of the pad is easily cleanable. Good size. Durable zippers, the shoulder strap is convenient but weird to hold pet under arm, kind of unwieldy. However, luggage handle feature is great as long as you are NOT putting it on a carry on handle. It’s too big and will force the bag to topple over and/or you will have to hold it firmly in place while wheeling your carry on. Also, the pet will slide to the front and kind of tip over the side of your carry on a bit. The fold out “tent” is nice but my pet wasn’t interested, so would not opt for a fold out tent in a carrier, especially if you are not utilizing it for long periods of time. It’s a nice color (gray) and material. Good replacement choice for my old carrier.

Moving overseas with cats was a BREEZE
My husband and I just moved from the US to Europe with two cats in a pandemic, and when I tell you I was STRESSED.Our cats had never flown before, but we bought these carriers hoping for the best. And they are THE BEST.These carriers are sturdy. Sturdy enough for our 15 lb cat to stand on in and not crush it. The light plywood insert never bowed, it kept both safe and flat.Theyâre comfortable and roomy. Both cats were able to turn around, sit up and lay down easily. Both took very comfy looking naps during one of our layovers. They are versatile. Oh my god are they versatile. We were able to easily take out and return the cats when going through TSA. We could open the big or small windows to give them treats or love during the flights. The luggage strap was MAGNIFICENT and fit easily onto our rolling carry ons which came in handy when we had to run to catch a connection. We had 4 different flights, all on different sized aircraft, and these carriers under the seat in front of us for all of them without issue. They are so easy to clean. One of the cats had a small accident during our first flight, so we found a family restroom to clean her and the carrier in between flights. The inside was easy to wipe down, and the removable fluffy bed insert washed and dried easily and quickly with NO SMELL.We flew for almost 24 hours total, and I didnât have to worry about them once. We have already recommended these carriers to all of our friends traveling with pets and look forward to our future adventures with our fur babies.Buy this carrier, seriously itâs the best. Plus it comes in fun colors!

The Best
Hands down the best quality and most attractive design weâve found. Such a thoughtful design, with plenty of ventilation, openings, and space for our precious pup. Very sturdy as well, which is a standout amongst other expandable bags on the market

Quality carrier
I had no problem fitting this under the seat for a Southwest flight. It has a lot of versatile and useful features such as the pop-out extension, zippers to let their head out, and pouches to hold the shoulder strap or your pet’s water dish. The built-in leash to secure to their harness allowed my pets to move around safely, but I didn’t have to worry about them jumping out. It’s easy to fold-up and collapse the carrier for storage. Fit 10 lb shihtzu no problem.

Highly recommended following a 25-hour trip with my ~14.5 pound cat.
I was looking for a light but sturdy carrier as my cat is about 14.5 pounds and the weight limit on my particular airline was 17 pounds for pet plus carrier. [In the end no one actually weighed them, but my plan was to first remove the ‘bed’ inside if they asked to.] It also had to fit under the seat in front of me [it would have fitted sideways if not for a bolt on the side of one seat leg, but they were fine with it going underneath lengthways fortunately] so I needed something that wasn’t too rigid. I also thought the expandable part might be useful.Well… all I can say is it was absolutely fantastic. My cat had already taken two short rides in it to the vet, and unlike his usual carrier (bigger, but plastic with a thick blanket inside) he didn’t howl at all, so that seemed promising. I think the soft bed and its fit are the reason. BTW, a tip for getting your cat inside: if you can, hold your cat upside down in your arms, drop his bum in first through the open carrier top, then rotate him forward so that his head and front paws go in; this worked every time. Now we had to do: 1hr by car to LAX, 2 hrs at the airport, 11 hours on the plane (Air France), 1 hr at CDG (Paris), 3 hours in a rental car to the Eurotunnel at Calais, 1 hr on the car train, then finally almost 6 hours down to the SW of England.[All of this because you can’t take a cat in the cabin to the UK on any airline and I refused to fly my cat in the hold, which meant flying to Paris, renting a car and driving to Calais, then taking the car train (Eurotunnel) to the UK, since I believe you can’t carry a pet onto the trains (Eurostar) or ferries as a pedestrian, and the ferries make you leave your pet unattended in the car on their decks. FYI: as of writing this, Emotional Support Animals on US carriers may still be an exception to bringing a pet into the UK in the cabin due to the Americans With Disabilities Act, but although there are websites where one can certify one’s pet as an ESA, I definitely wasn’t okay with faking any kind of disability, even with the best of intentions; in addition, I believe that most airlines now require more medical paperwork anyway due to people abusing the system this way, and I don’t think the UK govt likes it much either as (according to their website) the airports that accept ESAs will potentially make you wait a long time while they ‘process’ your ESA at the other end.]Through it all my cat only complained once (in the car headed to LAX; more of an “oh boy, we aren’t going to the vet this time, are we”), and while I won’t say he was exactly happy (he spent hours with his nose shoved into the darkest corner of the carrier, and there were two or three shortlived occasions when he’d had enough and just wanted out) he emerged intact at the other end, explored his new home for about 15 minutes, then settled down and started purring, eating, and drinking as normal. [Not to put too fine a point on it, but I’m not sure he took advantage of the “Dry Fur” pad I’d lined the carrier with – the ‘small’ size fitted perfectly – so I was relieved when he also relieved himself as normal!]The small side window in one door was great – I basically had the carrier on my lap, petting him through the window while still blocking his exit with my arm, for 95% of the plane journey. And the expandable part was awesome too – being a big cat, he really appreciated getting to stretch out; he basically laid his upper body on my knees for at least half the flight (with the carrier body, holding his lower half, pressed tight against my tummy). The weirdest thing was that almost no one noticed I had a cat with me – I guess it didn’t look like a pet carrier, just a regular tote bag. So although (after much angst!) I had all the correct forms, and they were checked at LAX and (after I reported to the “Pet Reception”) at the Eurotunnel entrance, I have to wonder if anyone from CDG airport onwards would have even bothered to look if I hadn’t told them.[BTW, in case anyone reading this review is going through the same process, I needed his rabies certification plus the correct health certificate for “England via France” and then had to make an appointment to have it properly endorsed by the USDA APHIS office in El Segundo. You can also mail the certificate to Sacramento, but if you have anything wrong it’ll be returned, so if there’s a time limit (e.g. it must be obtained <10 days before travel for US to UK) you may be in trouble. It turned out my vet's printer 'disappeared' the strikethroughs on the form without us noticing, so I ended up driving to El Segundo twice the week before we flew. And fyi, half the people I heard having their forms rejected had either gotten the rabies shot after the microchip or within the last 21 days, both of which are against the instructions.]ANYWAY... to conclude, this carrier helped to make a potentially disastrous and very stressful situation work as well as possible, and I'm VERY grateful. My cat isn't small and has decent claws (since he still goes outside regularly so we didn't want to cut them too short) but he still wasn't able to break through the mesh windows (which are great too) or sides, despite trying a few times, although admittedly he was quiescent for most of the journey.Phew.

The picture shows an extendable part and was the reason I bought it. What I received, however, was just an ordinary carrier.

Fantastic crate! I flew my 9lb ragdoll cat 16 hours from Australia to America, then another 10 hours travelling to Canada, and she still loves to sleep inside it every day.She is a large (long and tall) cat, and probably would be more comfortable in the XL Big Apple version. I’m probably going to buy it or a similar model for domestic travel. This bag is high quality, comfortable, durable, strong enough for her to stand on top yet flexible to stuff under an airplane seat. Lots of compliments on the look as well 🙂 very good value!

Great design and high quality materials. My dog has no problem in it. The plush is nice but can be too hot, would be nice if the side plush was more of an insert and that the leash inside was adjustable.

My cat loves playing in it & even travelled in it for 4 hours on a recent trip to Devon. Sturdy / spacious / well made & comfy. Would thoroughly recommend.
