Finally – Help for the Masses!
What an incredible book! I learned about it when I was finally forced to consult with a Cat Behavior Consultant, after ruling out medical issues with my cat’s Vet. My cat Sophie is a 6 year old Bengal cat. She was never very active (unusual in a Bengal), and I always felt like she just wanted to be “left alone” – truly a bummer, since her twin brother is completely opposite – he is playful, healthy, and very communicative. So… I decided to add a third cat, thinking then my boy would have a playmate… and that’s when things went downhill fast. Sophie quickly began having outside of the box “accidents.” She was diagnosed with FLUTD which is a maddening condition that causes recurring bladder infections that are not easy to treat – I understand that often, it is caused by stress. So the inappropriate elimination, most times, was not due to a bladder infection (treatable with Antibiotics) but actually due to her stress in adding a 3rd cat, and her overall lack of stimulation and contentment. I learned from Marilyn’s book how to get her ENGAGED with me, which has ultimately led to near eradication of “accidents.” It has become a fun activity that we do together daily. What is interesting is to see how excited my other cats are about this too – my “new” cat is a year old and he has progressed lightyears beyond the others (he’s not set in his ways, I guess) 🙂 But I can say without reservation, this book is an essential tool for building a stronger bond with your cats, and for correcting behaviors like door darting and counter surfing (two BIG problems I had, with the new cat!). I saw Marilyn on Cats 101 demonstrating the technique, and I didn’t really “get it” at first – I thought it was neat but I really didn’t understand how it all worked. “Naughty No More!” walks you through all of the steps, so that you can teach even the most reluctant subject how to better communicate with us silly humans. Thanks Marilyn for such a well laid out process! We still have a lot of work to do, but the unwanted behaviors have improved dramatically. We look forward to each new thing that our brilliant Bengals learn to do!

    A Solution to Cat Wars
Marilyn Krieger understands cats. The ability to understand what motivates (or not) is not easily described especially in the face of millennia (literally) of stereotypes about cats. She distills her understanding into sections regarding particular cat behaviors that are useful and may be revolutionary for those with a cat displaying that behavior, e.g., cats do not urinate out of the litter box because they are angry, but because the circumstances that work well for you, the human, place them in the state that we humans call stress. The sections that do not apply to your cat are still useful, interesting and deepen your understanding of cats. Cats can be trained as dogs can be trained. Cats can live an interesting and fulfilling life inside your house with the correct environmental stimuli. All of this is particularly important because we will face another change in our relationship with the feline if Peter Marra, author of Cat Wars: the devastating consequences of a cuddly killer has his way. His thesis is essentially correct. Cats should not be treated as disposable creatures of less value. The consequences of that approach has resulted in serious depredations of native species by the successful invader, the domesticated cat. His solution is terrible. The point being that we all must explore Marilyn Krieger’s understanding of cats and her solutions to unwanted cat behavior so that we arrive at a mindset where we are no more likely to let our cats outside unattended and unguarded, than we are our dogs, or our children.

    Good reference point
I’m a neophyte as a cat owner(?) or person, and I have been trying to find ways to curb our Kitty’s destructive claws. She’s an indoor/outdoor cat so she needs her claws, and most the vets in the area don’t declaw anyways. It’s really a good book for someone like me who isn’t sure why the cat has destroyed our furniture. I guess it’s a process that I have to go through.

Helpful, especially for the specific issues mentioned
This book helped me retrain my cat not to claw the carpet and furniture. The sprays were utterly ineffective, and the cat wasn’t interested in alternative surfaces. The book goes through all the steps. It took a while, cuz cats are only interested in training for like 5 seconds, but over the course of a few weeks it works. Best part is that it has problem solving sections that have specific how to information for specific issues, so you are given a a set of steps you can follow and aren’t left trying to figure things out on your own. Plus it’s a fairly quick read, unlike some of the other cat training books out there. And my cat actually enjoyed the training sessions – she goes to our spot and sits and stares at me, it’s like she’s got me trained….

Absolutely loving Marilyn’s book! I’ve given it 5 stars on both Amazon.ca and iBooks as I picked up a digital and physical copy.We stop countertop surfing immediately by reading her chapter on it, and removing the cats’ food/treats and moving their cat tree so they could make eye contact with us while we were in the same. The case studies in each chapter are super helpful.Just started clicker training for today and it was surprisingly so much fun—thanks for the great tips!
