Customers say

Customers find the filter sponge works well as a pre-filter, particularly in shrimp tanks, and appreciate its value for money and ease of cleaning. Moreover, they like its protective features, with one customer noting it prevents fish from getting sucked into the filter. However, customers disagree on the fit, with some reporting it’s too big for AquaClear 50 filters. Additionally, durability receives mixed feedback, with some finding it durable while others report quality issues. Moreover, water flow is a concern, as customers mention it gets clogged over time and limits flow significantly.

    Better than I expected
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much. I was wrong. These are a good quality and priced correctly. I have a Fluval 207 canister filter on a small aquarium and these work great!

Excellent Pre Filterm fits Marineland Filter H.O.B.
I put it on the intake of my Marineland 350 hang on the back filter. I have 2 of these filters on my 40 gallon tank. I have 2 turtles, about 7 inches in diameter each and recently added some gold fish. It was a struggle to keep the water clear before i got the goldfish. The goldfish would eat/ mouth the turtle poop so it would dissolve in the water, previously i was able to vacuum it out about twice a month, but now its all dissolved. I added a 2nd Marineland 350 and still cloudy. I changed water 4 days in a row and still cloudy. I added these as a pre filter and got a Marineland Polisher internal filter and now my water is crystal clear. I removed the Marineland Polisher filter and the water is still clear more than a week later after i removed the polisher. I had to rinse the sponges after about 2.5 weeks because it caught so much dirt it was slowing the water flow of the filter significantly. I removed the sponge and rinsed it out and placed it back on, the water flow is back to normal. I havn’t had to change the filter cartridge for about 3 weeks now, i usually the cartridges get clogged within a week.

    Works fine with two warnings
I have used one for 3 weeks on an AquaClear 50 on a very crowded 10-gallon tank (more than 40 mollies making lots of poop). When the sponge is new or well cleaned, water from the faucet runs right through it almost no resistance. I didn’t notice any less water output when I first installed this pre-filter, nor any noticeable decrease after one week. But by two weeks, the output did drop. When I ran the faucet through the dirty sponge, it felt heavy as water had a harder time passing through. So warning #1 is that you have to clean it periodically or else your filter won’t work as well and you risk burning out the motor. Rub the material against itself when cleaning to dislodge junk that has penetrated deeply or adhered.Warning #2 is that you should insert the intake tube into the sponge as little as possible so that water is drawn through the entire sponge. This improves flow and prolongs time between cleaning. If you push an intake tube with a blunt end (like the end of a drinking straw) all the way in, then all of the water must ultimately pass through a tiny disk of sponge material. The concentration of flow will mean faster clogging, lower flow and motor strain. The AquaClear’s tube is actually a little smaller in diameter than the sponge’s hole, so I use a rubber band to hold it in place. Even if your tube is wider, you might use a rubber band or cable tie to help keep the sponge on with minimal insertion. The insertion problem is worsened by a manufacturing defect in 2 of the 4 units I got. See photo. In the two units that I plan to use, the hole is about 7cm/3in deep, which is almost the whole length of the unit, which is what you’d expect. But in the other two units, the hole is only about 4cm/1.7in, which is only about half the length of the unit. The shallower hole means more flow restriction and faster clogging, even if you install it with minimal insertion. This is why 4 starts instead of 5.

Save yourself major money on filter pads
I use to replace filter pads at least once per month mainly due to them being clogged with algae not really poop or anything else. I no longer have any substrate either sand or gravel in my filters. My filter pads now last 3-4 months as they are no longer being constantly clogged. I just rinse these off twice a week and they’re good as new. Looking forward to saving major money on filter pads as I have 7 filters and I’ll no longer be replacing pads once per month or replacing filter shafts or impeller due to damage from substrate

    Awesome for fry!
These are a no-brainer as an upgrade to your filtration. They work great as a pre-filter or to prevent vulnerability fry from being sucked into the filter and becoming trapped. It should be noted that they’ll only fit HOB filters with a thin enough inlet tube. My Tetra whisper 60 has an inlet far too wide for one of these filters. However, if they fit (which for the vast majority of filters they will) they’re awesome and ai would buy them again if I needed to!

Did not work well for my outdoor fountain pump
I used this sponge filter on my outdoor fountain pump. This sponge would break off pieces when I pulled it off the pump for cleaning. It may work for light duty purposes, but for my intended use it was insufficient and not durable for my outdoor fountain pump.

    works for me
these sponge pre-filters fit over the intake pipe of your aquarium filter to help filter some of the water to help your aqaurium filter last longer. it helps me filter laster almost 2 or 3 months before i have to change them out even though i have to clean the pre-filters weekly and toss them away after a few months of use

Perfect protection to stop my shrimplets from entering the intake of the HOB plus now gives more grazing area for the shrimp.Even my Corydoras like grazing on the surface.

Bought this pre-filter sponge to protect tiny fish in my tank. The hole is a little big for the Aqua Clear 30 aka 150 intake pipe. Hacked it by using a zip tie around the filter intake pipe and now the pre-filter sponge stays in place. Works well so far.Would suggest buying a sponge with smaller inner diameter for the Aqua Clear 30 formerly Aqua Clear 150 filter. However this works fine with the zip tie. Some people have also tied Rubber bands at the top to hold it in place and protect the frys from being sucked in.
