Here are four key points about wild bird feed
Nutritional Variety
Wild bird feed should offer a diverse range of seeds, grains, and nuts to cater to the varied diets of wild birds. Different species have different preferences, so a mix of seeds like sunflower, millet, and nyjer, along with grains like corn and oats, provides essential nutrients for a wide range of birds.
Freshness and Quality
High-quality bird feed should be fresh and free from contaminants or mold. It’s essential to store bird feed in a cool, dry place and use it within a reasonable timeframe to maintain freshness. Look for reputable brands known for their quality and reliability, like Schoen Farms.
Feeder Design
The type of bird feeder used can influence the accessibility of the feed to different bird species. For example, tube feeders with small feeding ports are suitable for smaller birds like finches, while platform feeders accommodate larger birds like cardinals and jays. Choosing the right feeder design can help attract a diverse range of birds to your feeding station.
Seasonal Considerations
Wild bird feeding needs can vary depending on the season. During colder months, birds require higher-calorie foods to maintain their energy levels, so offering foods like suet and black oil sunflower seeds can be beneficial. In the spring and summer, birds may prefer foods high in protein to support breeding and raising young. Adapting your bird feed offerings to seasonal needs can help support bird populations year-round.

No mess!
Love feeding the birds and this is the best seed ever! The birds donât mind at all that itâs all the same, they flock to my feeder. The best part is no mess! No seed hulls on the ground to clean up. Iâve had dozens of different species and they all seem to like these seeds. I wonât ever buy anything else.

Quality of this product is excellent
I bought two different bags one from Schoen another from another company. The other company was mainly dust in the bag, the quality of the Schoen was excellent. Decided to buy another bag, feeding the wild birds is getting expensive but I enjoy it.

Great product, one drawback
This is a great product and good value. Our bird friends love it. Birds apparently enjoy hulled striped sunflower seeds as much as black oil sunflower seeds. Who knew? And it’s our understanding that both are equally nutritious. The one drawback? Our bag was almost all kernels. They were few if any chips. We were hoping for a mix of but didn’t get it here. Some birds prefer chips and find them easier to eat. We contacted the company about this, and they responded right away with: “we hear you and are currently working on ways to have more chips in our product.” However, we bought more product but had the same problem. We contacted the company again a few more times, but this time there was no response. We’ve since decided to look elsewhere for bird food.

Sunflower kernels and chips.
I had a couple of issues with the old bird food I was using. I was getting tired of picking up all the outside shells around the bird feeders. Having just the kernels and chips eliminates that issue. Yes they are expensive but some times you pay for convenience. I also like them better than the nut and berry type of bird food. We have a few dogs and a several weeks ago one of the dogs ate some of the seed that had fallen to the ground. The problem was the old bird seed had raisins in the food which is toxic to dogs. After a 400 dollar vet bill to save the dog it left me with the only a few options. Get rid of the feeders or just get the sunflower kernels and chips . So now I have the best of both worlds. Enjoying our dogs and the birds without having to worry about the dogs getting sick or worse. Itâs peace of mind for me and well worth the money.

Feeding Frenzy
Received my bag on Wednesday, the day after finches returned. Have filled my tube feeder TWICE since!! Putting up second feeder today. Very popular with my birds!!

Twice as many birds and varieties since I started to use this
To entertain my cat I started to feed the birds on my porch railing in a little saucer. Usually, I get the chickadees and a handful of annoying purple finches. Since I started using these seeds I am suddenly getting hairy woodpeckers, goldfinches, tufted titmouse, junco, nuthatches, song and chipping sparrows, blue jays, etc. With the larger pieces they take a few and fly in the trees to eat them allowing for the other, not so aggressive birds, a chance. So glad I switched from the cheap brand with sunflower chips, dust and crumbs, I use to use. The birds had to pick through it to find a reasonable size to eat. That caused the greedy birds, like purple finches, to stay longer and chase the other birds away.Very, very happy with my purchase! Now it entertains not just my cat but me as well. Thank you for such a wonderful product. Happy in Vermont!

just what the feathered babies ordered
I’ve ordered this several times & I appreciate that the “meats” are so large. More protean. All my birds, from itty bitty to Cardinal or larger love them… Sometimes if the feeder is low they actually fight for the scraps…eak. This is a wonderful option. I do recommend the 10lb pack, the critters love it that much..When you open the bag, it smells wonderful..

I buy these for my cats, decent price and the birds and squirrels love them and my cats love to watch the outdoor critters enjoy the seeds so I’d say thats 5/5 stars, lots of seed, very little if any shell/husk.
