Officers from Nisqually Public Safety were dispatched to the parking lot of Old Nisqually Markets after receiving reports of a woman unresponsive in her vehicle. Upon arrival, officers found Misty Reddoch slumped over, surrounded by drug paraphernalia—including two glass pipes, hypodermic needles, and a white powder she admitted was likely fentanyl. She also turned over a bag of what she described as black tar heroin.
Realizing she would be arrested, Reddoch asked if someone could care for her two dogs: an adult dog and a young puppy. Officers retrieved the animals from the vehicle, but soon noticed the puppy—later named Espresso—was exhibiting symptoms consistent with opioid exposure. He was barely responsive, struggling to stay awake.
Emergency responders administered Narcan to the puppy on the spot. Additional doses were provided to both dogs by animal services personnel, ultimately requiring three doses in total—two for the adult dog and one for Espresso. Their quick intervention saved both animals’ lives.
Espresso was taken in by Seattle Humane, where staff reported that the puppy had “been through a lot over the past week” and had “nearly died from a fentanyl overdose.” The shelter shared updates on social media, expressing gratitude that the pup pulled through. Once legal proceedings are complete, Espresso will be placed for adoption.
Reddoch was arrested just two days later when she returned to the impound lot to retrieve her vehicle. Prosecutors charged her with first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, second-degree animal cruelty, and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. A search of the vehicle also uncovered a loaded Smith & Wesson firearm, a passport, and several forms of ID. Reddoch is prohibited from owning firearms due to a prior felony conviction.
Espresso’s survival serves as a powerful reminder of the dangers drugs pose—not just to people, but to innocent animals as well. Authorities are urging pet owners to be vigilant and seek immediate help if an animal is exposed to any potentially harmful substance.
