As a runner, I’ve had my fair share of memorable animal encounters. I’ve spotted striped skunks (who, in case you’re wondering, are not fans of surprise affection), playful squirrels, and the occasional fox darting across the trail. Even an overly enthusiastic dog behind a fence can provide an adrenaline boost — just not the kind most runners are hoping for!
Still, there’s something uniquely soothing about the kind of wildlife you find in nature preserves and wooded parks. Deer, in particular, seem to embody calmness and quiet strength. And even though they didn’t offer any outward signs of encouragement to Alondra, their presence was enough to help her push forward.
