From Roof to Forever Home: Terry’s Remarkable Transformation
For two long years, two small dogs lived chained on a rooftop in Mexico, exposed to the unforgiving sun, rain, and cold. Their fur had grown into filthy, matted coats that made it hard to even recognize them as dogs. The heartbreaking situation finally came to an end when a neighbor filed a complaint with the environmental protection office, leading to their rescue.
When the pups were finally removed from the roof, their conditions shocked everyone. Their coats were so severely neglected that it took rescuers nearly four hours to shave away the mats and dirt. Both were then given warm baths for what was likely the first time in years. Despite the cruelty they endured, their sweet spirits began to shine through the moment they were freed.
One of the dogs was adopted almost immediately after arriving at the shelter, but his brother, a seven-year-old senior named Terry, was left behind. At first, Terry was shut down, a shell of himself after years of isolation. But slowly, with patient care, his true personality began to emerge. He discovered joy in walks, cuddles, and playtime, lighting up “like a Christmas tree,” as his rescuers described it.
Still, his age became a barrier. Many potential adopters overlooked him, unwilling to take in a senior dog. For nearly seven months, West Coast Paws had Terry listed without receiving a single inquiry. Then, Lee and Danny came across his profile. The moment Lee saw Terry’s face, she felt something stir in her heart. Watching the footage of Terry’s painful past alongside his fluffy, hopeful face sealed their decision—they knew he was meant to be theirs.
Adopting Terry meant figuring out how to get him from Mexico to his new home in British Columbia, Canada. With the help of volunteers, Terry and three other rescue dogs boarded a flight from Mexico City to Seattle. The journey took around 10 hours, but Terry was in good hands with experienced handlers by his side. Though a little nervous, he managed the trip well, and at the end of it, his life was about to change forever.
When Terry finally met Lee and Danny at the airport, it was love at first sight. The connection was instant. Within days, Terry was already showing his full personality, filling his new home with laughter and joy. His parents fell completely in love with their goofy, affectionate boy, grateful to give him the happy life he had always deserved.
Terry’s story is a reminder that senior dogs deserve a chance too. With love, patience, and a little faith, an unwanted dog transformed from a broken, neglected stray into a beloved family member. His journey from rooftop chains to cuddles on the couch is proof that it’s never too late for a fresh start.
