In a heartbreaking case of cruelty, a young puppy is battling for his life after being found inside a tied-off garbage bag in Battle Creek, Michigan, on August 13, 2025. Sarah Wood, a local resident, made the shocking discovery around 6:30 a.m. near East Avenue N and Morgan Road. She stopped her car after hearing faint, desperate squeals from the roadside, only to find the pup gasping for air inside the sealed bag.

“I was getting ready to stop at the stop sign and I heard the puppy screaming and crying,” Wood recalled. “I want to know who did this, like who would do this to an innocent puppy.”

Wood immediately contacted All Species Kinship (A.S.K.), a non-profit animal rescue organization. Volunteers rushed the dog to a veterinarian, where he was diagnosed with severe malnourishment, dehydration, and heat stroke. “We don’t think this dog had many more hours, maybe not even an hour left to survive,” said Sophia DiPietro, A.S.K.’s executive director.

The veterinary team also discovered the puppy was covered in fly larvae, indicating he had been trapped for many hours before being found. He has suffered seizures, significant vision loss, and is currently unable to stand. DiPietro described his condition as the result of “prolonged neglect,” explaining that the evidence points to him being kept in filthy, inhumane conditions before being abandoned.

Although his condition remains critical, there have been small signs of improvement since the rescue. The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office has filed a police report, but so far, no suspects have been identified. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.

Sarah Wood has already made it clear that, if the puppy survives, she intends to adopt him and provide a safe, loving home. Her determination mirrors the efforts of the A.S.K. team, who continue to fight for his recovery.

“This little one has been through so much,” DiPietro said. “We are doing all we can and are hoping for the best.”

The incident has drawn outrage and compassion from the community, with many offering prayers, donations, and support. For now, the puppy’s journey is one of survival against all odds—and a reminder of the urgent need to protect the most vulnerable animals from cruelty.
